DAVID SALISBURY SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN YORKSHIRE
David Salisbury, a man from Yorkshire, has been sentenced to nine years in prison following his conviction for two counts of penetrative sexual activity with a child. The court proceedings took place at Leeds Crown Court, where Salisbury was found guilty after a full trial.
The case revealed that Salisbury, aged 43, initiated contact with a young girl during the mid-2000s.
Over the course of several months, the offender engaged in a series of messages exchanged with the girl, during which he expressed his feelings for her.
This communication culminated in unspeakable acts that profoundly impacted the victim's life.
During sentencing, Recorder Tahir Khan KC addressed Salisbury directly, condemning his actions and highlighting the manipulative grooming process he undertook.
The judge stated, “Over the best part of a year, you groomed this child and made her think this was a relationship when it clearly was not.
It’s clear to me she only wanted to be loved, but was vulnerable and you took advantage of that vulnerability.
There was a complete denial of any wrongdoing and not showed a hint of regret or responsibility.” The court heard harrowing details of Salisbury’s misconduct, including unprotected sexual encounters with the girl on two separate occasions.
Despite her clear reluctance and the fact that Salisbury was in a relationship at the time, he engaged in these acts.
The victim, displaying remarkable bravery, read out an impact statement to the court.
In her words, she conveyed years of suffering and shame, describing how Salisbury had effectively controlled her life.
She said, “For years I have held a secret because I was ashamed.
I found myself in this situation that I realized was wrong.
You groomed me, abused me and sexually assaulted me.
For years you have controlled my life.
You convinced me that it was real and you cared for me.
You stood there and believed you did nothing wrong, but you ruined my childhood.” In mitigation, Salisbury’s legal representative, James Littlehales, argued that despite Salisbury’s extensive criminal record, which includes 35 convictions across 74 offenses, none were related to sexual offenses or had resulted in investigations prior to this case.
Littlehales also described Salisbury as having become a “model prisoner” during his time on remand, seeking to present a more favorable view of the defendant’s character.
Following the sentencing, Detective Reece Hampshire, from the Wakefield Child Safeguarding Unit that led the investigation, spoke publicly about the case.
He emphasized the long-lasting trauma inflicted on the victim, stating, “These offences have troubled the victim for the past 17 years whilst they attempt to process the abuse they were subjected to.
The lasting impact of what took place has cost them more than can be expressed in words.” Hampshire praised the victim’s courage, saying, “The level of courage it takes for the victim to come forwards after so many years and report the matter to the police cannot be understated.
I have nothing but feelings of admiration for their bravery and determination in the pursuit of justice for what they have been through.” He added a message of hope for others, encouraging those who have suffered abuse, recent or historic, to come forward and seek help.
“I hope that this conviction can be the start of a new beginning for the victim and that they can begin to heal from the pain inflicted all those years ago and more recently during the court process.
The victim would like to thank everyone involved in the investigation and court processes for their actions leading to this much welcomed conviction,” Hampshire concluded.
