DAVID NEWSOME FROM LEYLAND AND PLYMOUTH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON GIRL AND WOMAN
In a case that has shocked the communities of Plymouth and Leyland, David Newsome, a 45-year-old former boat-builder, has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a teenage girl and an adult woman.Newsome, who previously resided in Plymouth but has since moved to Leyland, Lancashire, faced charges of indecent assault and sexual misconduct. Despite his denial of the allegations, a jury at Plymouth Crown Court found him guilty of all charges after a detailed trial.
The court heard that Newsome had indecently touched a teenage girl while she was lying in her bed at her home in Plymouth. The judge, Paul Darlow, described the incident as a clear case of grooming, emphasizing that Newsome’s actions had involved exposing the girl to inappropriate material, including pornography, which further indicated a manipulative pattern of behavior.
Additionally, Newsome was convicted of sexually assaulting an adult woman in July 2012. The court proceedings revealed that the assaults on both victims were serious and had caused significant distress.
During the trial, Newsome also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis. His legal representative, Garth Richardson, announced plans to appeal the conviction, asserting that Newsome could not accept the jury’s verdict. Richardson stated, “He cannot bring himself to accept the jury’s verdict. He genuinely continues to say that it never happened. He said it was skylarking and play-fighting which went too far.”
It was also noted that Newsome was in poor health during the trial, having been hospitalized with a suspected heart attack. Despite his health issues, the court was informed that he was considered a man of good character prior to these incidents.
Judge Darlow sentenced Newsome to two years and ten months for the sexual assault of the girl, with an additional month for the indecent assault on the woman. The court did not impose any separate penalty for the cannabis possession, focusing instead on the gravity of the sexual offenses committed.
As the verdict was delivered, Newsome expressed his dissatisfaction, returning from hospital to learn of his conviction. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and has raised concerns about safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable individuals in the community.
