DAVID MORGAN AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN PORT TALBOT AND CWMAVON
A man from Port Talbot has been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl, as well as engaging in controlling and coercive behavior within an intimate relationship. The court heard that David Morgan, aged 35, was involved in multiple instances of abusing a schoolgirl, including giving her alcohol before assaulting her.According to court proceedings, the sexual misconduct took place in 2019 and involved Morgan having sex with the girl on several occasions. One particularly disturbing incident involved him handing her a can of Stella lager to drink prior to the abuse. On another occasion, after unprotected sex with her, Morgan told the girl she need not worry about pregnancy because he claimed to be infertile due to his drug use. The prosecution, led by Helen Randall, revealed that the girl’s mother reported that these events had caused a significant decline in her daughter’s mental health, highlighting the damaging impact of Morgan’s actions.
In addition to the sexual offenses, Morgan’s behavior extended into a pattern of controlling and manipulative conduct within a relationship. Court documents detailed how he isolated his partner from her friends and family, repeatedly accused her of infidelity, and exerted control over her personal life. He forced her to delete her email account and compelled her to give up her small business, effectively dominating her life and choices.
Morgan, who resides on Brynglas Avenue in Cwmavon, Afan Valley, had previously admitted to three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, as well as controlling and coercive behavior. His criminal record includes six prior convictions for ten different offenses, notably including assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
During the sentencing hearing, Morgan’s legal representative, Robin Rouch, argued that the sexual offending was confined to a relatively short period and emphasized that there had been no similar incidents before or after. Rouch also stated that Morgan was willing to participate in any available rehabilitative courses.
However, Judge Paul Thomas KC addressed the court with a stern warning. He pointed out that Morgan had, on at least one occasion, given alcohol to a child before engaging in sexual activity. The judge also referenced a disturbing part of the pre-sentence report, where Morgan claimed to have no sexual interest in children. The report quoted Morgan as saying, “There is a word for people like you Mr Morgan – that is 'paedophile'. The quicker you come to terms with that fact the better for you and for everyone you come into contact with.”
Taking into account Morgan’s guilty pleas, which earned him a reduction of one-quarter in his sentence, the judge sentenced him to a total of five years and seven months in prison. This sentence comprises five years and three months for the sexual offenses, with an additional four months for the controlling and coercive behavior, to be served consecutively. Furthermore, Morgan will be subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
