DAVID MOODY JAILER IN JERSEY FOR RAPE OF VULNERABLE WOMAN IN CARE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the island of Jersey, support worker David William Moody has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of rape and indecent assault against a vulnerable woman under his care.The incident took place over a period spanning from July 2017 to March 2020, during which Moody, aged 59, exploited his position within the care team to commit these heinous acts.
The Royal Court heard that Moody initially joined the victim's care team, where he gained her trust before gradually isolating her and subjecting her to repeated sexual abuse.
Although Moody left the care team in 2018, evidence revealed that he continued to abuse the woman even after his departure.
During his time working as a support worker, Moody kept notes that referenced watching DVDs with the victim, which investigators later determined was a coded message indicating times when he had raped her.
Further troubling details emerged during the trial, including Moody's attempts to secure new employment within another care agency.
He sought to transfer the victim’s care to another team, with the apparent aim of maintaining his role as the team leader in her support package, thereby continuing his access to her.
The case came to light in February 2020 when an adult safeguarding alert was raised after sexual messages between Moody and the victim were discovered.
Following this alert, appropriate support was provided to the victim, who then disclosed the full extent of the abuse she had endured at Moody’s hands.
Moody was eventually arrested in September 2022 and formally charged in March of the following year.
In addition to his prison sentence, he was placed on the sex offender’s register for a period of ten years and was issued an indefinite restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim or further harm.
This case highlights the serious breach of trust and the devastating impact of abuse by someone in a position of care and responsibility, raising ongoing concerns about safeguarding and oversight within support services in Jersey.
