DAVID LEWIS OF IPSWICH JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BRAMFORD ROAD
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Ipswich, David Lewis, a 65-year-old former school caretaker residing on Bramford Road, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences.The case came to light after the victim, a four-year-old girl, was subjected to a sexual assault while Lewis was on holiday, an incident that was reported by the girl’s mother to the police authorities.
Following the report, law enforcement officers conducted a thorough search of Lewis’s residence in Ipswich.
During the search, they uncovered a disturbing collection of over 1,000 indecent images depicting children on his personal computer.
The images ranged across various levels of severity, with 697 classified as level one, 75 at level two, 370 at level three, 192 at level four, and six at level five, indicating a wide spectrum of explicit content.
Lewis was taken into custody and subsequently admitted to engaging in sexual touching of the young girl.
He also pleaded guilty to charges of taking an indecent photograph of a child and creating numerous indecent images of minors.
The court proceedings revealed that Lewis’s actions were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of disturbing behavior.
Judge Rupert Overbury, presiding over the case at Ipswich Crown Court, emphasized the seriousness of Lewis’s conduct and the importance of imposing a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others.
In his sentencing remarks, the judge stated, “The nature of what you did while you were on holiday was extremely serious.” In addition to the prison term, Lewis was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.
Furthermore, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which restricts his access to the internet and limits his contact with females under the age of 16, aiming to prevent any future offences.
Prosecutor Hugh Vass provided further details, explaining that the indecent assault occurred while Lewis was on holiday, and the victim’s mother had witnessed him taking inappropriate photographs of her daughter, prompting her to alert the police.
The authorities then executed a search warrant at Lewis’s Ipswich home, where they discovered a staggering 1,340 indecent images of children stored on his computer.
During police interviews, Lewis expressed remorse, stating that he was disgusted with himself.
His defense attorney, Azza Brown, highlighted that her client had been viewing child pornography for several years, accumulating the images over a span of seven years.
She also noted that Lewis had cooperated fully with law enforcement and had voluntarily sought professional help to address his behavior.
Brown further explained that Lewis’s interest in child pornography reportedly began after he ceased working as a school caretaker, suggesting a possible link between his previous employment and his disturbing online activity.
The case underscores the ongoing concerns about child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness in protecting vulnerable children from harm.
