DAVID JOHNSON SENTENCED IN BRADFORD FOR YEARS OF VILE SEXUAL ABUSE ON YOUNG GIRL
In a harrowing case heard at Bradford Crown Court, David Johnson, aged 43, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for subjecting a young girl to a prolonged period of sexual abuse that spanned nearly a decade.The court was told that Johnson, a resident of Westcombe Court, Low Moor, Bradford, had manipulated and exploited the girl from the time she was approximately four or five years old until she reached the age of 12.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Johnson’s actions were fueled by his own history of serious sexual abuse as a child, a factor that the court acknowledged as part of his background.
Despite this, Judge John Potter emphasized that Johnson’s own trauma did not justify or mitigate the severity of his crimes.
The judge stated, “You sought to exploit and control this girl over the years of your abuse of her.
You did so for the purpose of nothing more than your own drug-fuelled, perverted sexual gratification.” Johnson faced multiple charges, including four counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault.
The evidence presented indicated that the abuse was not only persistent but also carried out as frequently as twice a week.
The court heard that Johnson would often be under the influence of cannabis and cocaine during these assaults.
Witnesses described how the girl would cry and scream, pleading for him to stop, but Johnson would either dismiss her pleas or respond with explicit sexual noises, further traumatizing her.
In a disturbing detail, the court was informed that after some of these abusive episodes, Johnson would sometimes give her £5, instructing her not to tell anyone about what had happened.
As the girl grew older, the frequency of the abuse diminished, and eventually, Johnson ceased his actions.
It was only years later that the girl confided in police and social services, leading to Johnson’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
Prosecutor Gerald Hendron highlighted that Johnson had prior convictions for similar offences, including a guilty plea to indecently assaulting a seven-year-old boy when he was a juvenile.
Johnson’s criminal record also includes two previous convictions for sexual offences, which underscored a pattern of predatory behavior.
During the trial, Johnson’s defense, led by solicitor Sophie Drake, argued that he had been taken into care as a child and had never received proper support to address his own past trauma.
Miss Drake emphasized that Johnson was a vulnerable individual, currently under 24-hour suicide watch in prison, and suggested that his own history of sexual abuse contributed to his offending behavior.
Judge Potter acknowledged the courage of the young girl in giving her testimony, noting her consistent and brave recounting of her ordeal despite the trauma.
To protect her and other children from future harm, the court also imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order on Johnson, aiming to prevent any further offenses.
