DAVID JACKSON OF LEEDS SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR CAMPUS AREA RAPE SPREE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Leeds community, David Jackson, a 28-year-old man from Osmondthorpe, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after being convicted of a series of heinous crimes targeting women near a university campus.

Jackson's criminal activities spanned over a year and a half, during which he stalked and attacked female victims as they made their way home from Leeds University to their accommodations in the Hyde Park district of Leeds.

The attacks, characterized by their brutality and calculated nature, took place predominantly during nighttime hours, with Jackson often concealing his face by wearing a balaclava to maintain anonymity.

The case was brought before Leeds Crown Court, where Jackson faced a 14-day trial that culminated in a guilty verdict on multiple charges.

The jury found him guilty of one count of rape, three counts of indecent assault, two counts of attempted indecent assault, and four counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The judge, Mr.

Justice Harrison, delivered a stern judgment, condemning Jackson's predatory behavior.

In his remarks, Mr.

Justice Harrison stated, "You lay in wait for your victims at night time, hooded by a balaclava to obscure your face.

You attacked your victims from behind and dragged them into the undergrowth.

You then subjected them to terrifying ordeals from which they have not yet fully recovered.

You subjected them to sexual indignities.

Offences such as these should be punished by a substantial period of imprisonment." The jury took 27 hours to reach their verdicts, ultimately finding Jackson guilty of one indecent assault, two attempted indecent assaults, and three assaults causing bodily harm.

On the following Monday, they also convicted him of the remaining charges, including the rape itself.

Jackson, who married just a month prior to the first attack, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

He claimed that during the nights of the initial assaults in June 1991, he was at his fiancée's parents' house preparing for a church conference in Brighton.

Jackson is a member of the New Testament Church of God in Harehills, Leeds, and stated that he and his wife, Jennifer, along with their families, always stayed together, shopped together, and did everything as a unit before the event.

The court was informed that between June 1991 and October 1992, Jackson was responsible for five separate attacks.

Each incident involved him running up to a woman, forcibly dragging her into a nearby parkland area known as Woodhouse Moor, and threatening to kill her.

Despite the police's efforts, the investigation initially reached a dead end, with no concrete leads to identify the attacker.

The breakthrough came when Jackson himself inadvertently provided a crucial clue.

After reading about another rape in the same area—an attack he was not responsible for—Jackson wrote a letter to Detective Superintendent Bob Taylor, the officer leading the investigation.

In his letter, Jackson accused the other attacker of 'jumping on the bandwagon' and called him 'a fool' for showing his face.

Jackson signed the letter with the alias 'Jack The Stripper.' Handwriting analysis and DNA evidence subsequently linked Jackson to the crimes, sealing his fate and leading to his conviction.

The case has highlighted the dangers faced by women in the Leeds area and underscored the importance of forensic evidence in solving complex criminal cases.
