DAVID HODGSON SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN CUMBRIA
In a case that has shocked the community of Cumbria, David Hodgson, a 62-year-old man, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls in the region. The sentencing took place at Carlisle Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of Hodgson’s crimes, which spanned several decades and involved multiple victims.
Hodgson’s criminal history includes a prior conviction from 1976 at St Albans Crown Court, where he admitted to sexually abusing four young girls in Hertfordshire, resulting in a four-year jail sentence.
The recent charges, however, involved three young girls from Cumbria, all of whom were school-aged at the time of the abuse.
The court was told that Hodgson’s offenses included the rape of an 11 or 12-year-old girl, as well as acts of gross indecency committed against girls aged eight or nine and 12.
The prosecution, led by Robert Wyn-Jones, revealed that the crimes came to light after one of the victims confided in a care worker about her ordeal.
She recounted how Hodgson had given her cigarettes and money in exchange for performing sexual acts, which she described as a deeply distressing experience.
Another victim approached the police, seeking understanding about her own troubling behavior, which she linked to the abuse she suffered.
The third girl described being abused while Hodgson had pornographic images playing on his television, adding a disturbing context to the case.
Throughout the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Hodgson had a history of violence and sexual misconduct.
His victims described him as a “violent man,” who began abusing them when they were just 11 or 12 years old.
The impact of Hodgson’s actions was profound and long-lasting.
In their victim impact statements, two of the women who had been most recently abused expressed the devastating effects on their mental health and daily lives.
One victim wrote about the distress caused by the abuse, noting that it led to feelings of anger and disruptive behavior, which affected her schooling.
The other victim shared that the trauma had left her wary of men and unable to trust others, highlighting the deep emotional scars left by Hodgson’s actions.
Kim Whittlestone, representing Hodgson, noted that in recent months, her client had been living in a remote part of Scotland and had not been involved in any trouble since the allegations surfaced.
Despite this, the court emphasized the severity of the crimes committed.
Judge Paul Batty QC delivered the sentence, describing the offenses as “truly revolting” and acknowledging the horrific nature of the victim impact statements.
The judge pointed out that Hodgson’s guilty pleas were among the few mitigating factors in the case.
As part of the sentence, Hodgson was ordered to never work with children or have unsupervised access to minors again.
Additionally, upon release, he will serve an extended 10-year period on licence and will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct in the community.
