DAVID HARRINGTON'S HORRIFIC ABUSE IN BOLTON REVEALED AFTER MOTHER'S DEATH
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bolton, a man named David Harrington has been convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl over several years. The abuse, which spanned from when the girl was just five years old until she was eight, and included an incident when she was 12, has only come to light recently, following the death of Harrington's mother last year.David Harrington, aged 59 and residing on Uttley Street in Bolton, appeared before Bolton Crown Court to face sentencing for his crimes. He had previously admitted to five counts of indecent assault on a child and two counts of indecency with a child. However, one charge of rape was left on the file, and the prosecution chose not to pursue evidence on another rape charge, leading to Harrington’s formal acquittal on that count.
The court heard that Harrington's victim, now 34 years old, only disclosed her traumatic experiences after her mother’s death. Prosecutor Sara Dodd detailed the extent of Harrington’s abuse, revealing that he had assaulted the girl on numerous occasions at various locations. The abuse was not limited to physical assault; Harrington also subjected his terrified victim to viewing him engaging in sexual intercourse on two separate occasions. Additionally, he showed her pornographic images, further traumatizing her during her formative years.
The court was informed that Harrington’s actions left deep scars on the victim, who struggled with her ordeal for many years before finally speaking out. The gravity of the crimes and their long-lasting impact on the victim were emphasized during the proceedings.
In his defense, lawyer Bunty Batra argued that Harrington’s own history of abuse played a role in his actions. Batra explained that Harrington had been subjected to physical and sexual abuse himself before being placed into care at the age of nine. He remained in care until he was 16, which the defense claimed contributed to his troubled background.
Judge Gillian Ruaux acknowledged the severity of the offenses but explained that due to the laws in place at the time the crimes were committed, she was limited in the length of the sentence she could impose. She expressed her belief that a longer sentence would have been appropriate under current legal standards but stated that she was constrained by the law applicable during the period of the offenses.
Ultimately, Harrington was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The case has left a lasting impact on the Bolton community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and support for victims of childhood abuse.
