DAVID GREEN FROM BIRMINGHAM SENTENCED FOR 1983 KIDNAPPING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN WESTON-SUPER-MARE
In a significant development in cold case justice, David Green, a 60-year-old man residing in Moseley, Birmingham, has been formally sentenced for crimes committed over three decades ago in Weston-super-Mare.The case, which involved the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl, was reopened and thoroughly investigated by the Major Crime Review Team (MCRT), leading to Green's eventual arrest and conviction.
On July 17, 1983, Green abducted a young girl near Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare.
During the terrifying ordeal, he forcibly took her to a nearby storeroom where he assaulted her and issued threats, leaving her traumatized.
The crime scene and victim's clothing were preserved, but the case remained unsolved for many years, until recent forensic advancements provided new leads.
Thanks to the progress in forensic science, investigators were able to analyze fibre tapings taken from the victim’s clothing at the time of the assault.
These samples were subjected to DNA profiling, which ultimately yielded a match with an entry on the National DNA Database.
This breakthrough allowed authorities to identify David Green as the perpetrator.
Green was arrested at his residence in Moseley, Birmingham, on Friday, February 26, 2016.
Following his arrest, he was formally charged with multiple offenses, including kidnapping, sexual assault, and false imprisonment.
The case was brought before Bristol Crown Court, where Green pleaded guilty to all charges.
During the sentencing hearing held on August 4, 2016, Judge Picton described Green’s actions as “the stuff of nightmares,” emphasizing that the passage of time had not lessened the severity or impact of the crime.
The judge also highlighted the lasting scars inflicted on the victim, who would carry the trauma for the rest of her life.
Green was sentenced to nine years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for a minimum of ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
This case underscores the importance of advancements in forensic technology and the persistent efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring justice to victims of long-unsolved crimes.
It also serves as a stark reminder that even decades-old offenses can be revisited and prosecuted, providing closure for victims and their families.
