TELFORD PAEDOPHILE DAVID COX CAUGHT IN SHOCKING CHILD GROOMING PLOT AT WEDNESFIELD PARK

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Telford, a 52-year-old man named David Cox was apprehended after attempting to meet a supposed 12-year-old boy for sexual activity at Wednesfield Park, Wolverhampton.

The incident unfolded on March 18, when Cox was confronted by members of Internet Interceptors, a vigilant group dedicated to catching online predators.

The group had traveled over 200 miles to track down Cox after he bombarded them with explicit messages, images, and videos over nearly three weeks, using the gay dating app Grindr to communicate with what he believed was a young boy named Max.

During the live Facebook confrontation, Cox was seen walking past a children’s playground, engrossed in his smartphone.

As the group approached him, they called out, “David Cox?” prompting his face to fall in recognition of the situation.

His response was a simple, “Oh… God,” as he was quickly led away from the park, away from children playing nearby.

The group then instructed him to sit on a bench while police were summoned to the scene.

Initially, Cox denied any knowledge of the planned meeting, claiming it was a coincidence that they all happened to be at the park at the same time.

However, he eventually admitted that he had come to meet a 12-year-old boy, claiming his intentions were innocent, stating he just wanted to “sit and talk about school stuff.” Despite this, evidence found at the scene painted a far more sinister picture.

Officers discovered a grooming kit in Cox’s possession, which included Viagra, alcohol, poppers, and lubricant, but notably, no condoms.

This suggested premeditation and intent to engage in unprotected sex.

Further examination of Cox’s online communications revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming behavior.

Explicit texts and images exchanged with the decoy, who posed as a young boy, showed Cox’s desire to use poppers to “relax” before engaging in sexual acts at the boy’s house while his parents were out.

The chat logs also revealed Cox’s justification for his actions, claiming that “age is just a number” and that “young guys loved poppers,” despite being told the decoy was a virgin and had never had a boyfriend.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court, Cox pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child for sex following grooming and to attempting to cause a child to view sexual images.

The court heard that Cox’s online activity was extensive, with the Internet Interceptors team traveling over 200 miles to catch him after he sent obscene messages and videos over nearly three weeks.

The confrontation was filmed live and broadcast on Facebook, capturing the moment Cox was caught in the act.

Judge Peter Barrie sentenced Cox to two years and three months in prison.

He also ordered Cox to be placed on the sex offenders register for ten years and imposed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of Cox’s intentions, stating that there was no doubt he intended to sexually abuse the child he believed he was meeting.

He pointed out that the existence of platforms like Grindr does not justify or excuse such predatory behavior, especially when used with the clear intent of seeking sexual contact with minors.

Following the sentencing, a spokesperson for Internet Interceptors described Cox as “probably the worst sexual predator we’ve got,” highlighting the severity of his actions and the importance of vigilant online monitoring.

The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by online grooming and the critical role of dedicated groups in protecting children from predators like David Cox, whose actions have now led to a significant custodial sentence and a decade-long registration as a sex offender.
