DAVID BRYANT AND SHOCKING CHILD KIDNAPPINGS IN CUMBRIA AND NORTH EAST ENGLAND
A man accused of kidnapping four young girls during the 1980s and 1990s has been apprehended after law enforcement used DNA evidence collected over three decades ago, highlighting the effectiveness of modern forensic techniques.The suspect, David Bryant, aged 65, of Ulverston in Cumbria, initially denied charges of kidnapping and indecent assault but eventually changed his pleas, leading to a scheduled sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court on 16 March.
Prosecutor Mark Giuliani detailed how Bryant systematically targeted young girls who were simply out playing near their homes, a disturbing pattern that has left victims and communities shaken.
The prosecuting attorney emphasized the lasting impact on the children, stating, "Children have been effectively robbed of part of their childhood," underscoring the personal trauma inflicted by Bryant’s actions.
The first known victim was a five-year-old girl in Hampshire in 1982.
According to court records, her mother had briefly stepped inside her house to fetch drinks for the children, during which time the young girl was abducted.
She was quickly found nearby, but Bryant’s involvement was later confirmed when DNA evidence, which the police had preserved from the incident, was analyzed decades later.
The evidence revealed that Bryant had committed a sexual act on the girl, leaving biological material that ultimately led to his identification.
The following year, in Southampton, a three-year-old child was kidnapped while playing with other children.
Bryant allegedly lured her by offering to show her some puppies, then took her into the woods where he sexually abused her.
The young woman, speaking out as an adult, described her ongoing trauma, saying, “When I hear an ice cream van playing its music I am left with chills all over my body.
I am left remembering what happened to me at a very young age.” In the 1990s, Bryant’s predatory activities continued in Newcastle, where his third known victim was abducted from outside her home.
She was later found wandering in the town of Darlington, partially clothed and disoriented.
The court heard she was discovered by a taxi driver and later recounted her ordeal.
Bryant had taken her to a caravan in Cumbria, where he subjected her to sexual abuse and attempted to erase evidence by bathing her.
The next day, he abandoned the girl in Darlington, where she approached a stranger, distressed, and said, “I cannot find my daddy.” The investigation into these historic crimes was reignited when Hampshire Police undertook a cold case review of the attacks.
Advances in DNA technology, particularly the ability to analyze evidence from decades ago, played a pivotal role.
Police managed to identify Bryant by eliminating other male relatives from the investigations, ultimately linking him to the crimes.
It was revealed that Bryant, whose address is listed as Rock Cottages, Baycliff, Ulverston, had prior convictions involving sexual offenses against women spanning from 1975 to 1984.
These prior convictions, along with the recent DNA evidence, paint a troubling portrait of a repeat offender with a long history of sexually predatory behavior.
The case underscores how advancements in forensic science are now vital tools in bringing justice for victims of past crimes, particularly when years have passed without resolution.
