DAVID BEANEY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN NEW MALDEN: CHILD ABUSER ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CONTINUING DANGER
In a case that has sparked widespread outrage, 61-year-old David Beaney, a man with a history of criminal offenses, was recently sentenced at Kingston Crown Court after being convicted of child abuse in New Malden. Despite clear evidence of his involvement in molesting teenage boys, the court opted for a relatively lenient punishment, sparking criticism from child protection advocates and organizations working tirelessly to combat childhood sexual abuse.According to court records, the offenses took place in the early 1990s, with Beaney luring two teenage boys into his flat. There, he indecently assaulted them, engaging in sexual acts while watching pornographic videos. The court heard that he had previously been convicted of similar offenses, including a conviction in 1993 for which he received three years' probation. Additionally, he has at least two other convictions for indecent assault dating back to the 1970s, though he has never served time in prison for these.
During the trial in February, Beaney admitted to two of the six charges brought against him. The remaining charges were dropped, but the court was informed that he posed a significant ongoing threat to children. At the sentencing hearing held on Thursday, the judge handed down a 12-month suspended prison sentence for each of the two convictions. Furthermore, Beaney was prohibited from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
This decision has ignited fierce debate among child advocacy groups. Carmen Tracey, a counselor with the Wimbledon-based charity Breaking Free, expressed her dismay, stating, “This sends out the message that you can abuse children and get away with it if you are old and infirm. Is this really what our society wants and thinks? I work every day with survivors of childhood sexual abuse and see the terrible effects it has on them.”
Additional concerns were raised about Beaney’s ongoing associations. Court documents revealed that there are worries regarding his relationships with paper boys who deliver to his residence, which is located near a primary school in New Malden. His defense counsel, Nick Bleaney, highlighted Beaney’s health issues, including angina, high cholesterol, diabetes, an infected leg, and incontinence. The lawyer argued that these health problems influenced the court’s decision, with Judge Martin Binning noting that the only reason Beaney avoided jail was due to his failing health and the fact that the offenses occurred over a decade ago.
In the past, Beaney’s conduct has led to bans from various sports venues, including the Oval cricket ground and West Ham United’s Upton Park, after attempts to befriend young boys. His history of misconduct and the court’s leniency have left many questioning the adequacy of the punishment and the message it sends about justice for victims of child abuse in New Malden and beyond.
