DAVID ANDERSON SENTENCED IN HARTLEPOOL SEXUAL ABUSE CASE INVOLVING BOYS IN THE 1970S AND 1980S

A disturbing chapter in Hartlepool's history has come to light as five men, all in their seventies, have been convicted for their roles in sexually abusing young boys during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. The crimes, which took place in and around public toilets in the town, have left a lasting scar on the victims and have finally been addressed through a series of court proceedings.

Among those convicted is David Anderson, a 71-year-old resident of Grange Road. Anderson pleaded guilty to six counts of indecent assault, and his sentencing resulted in a prison term of nine years and one month. His crimes, committed decades ago, involved abusing boys whose ages ranged from 12 to 16 at the time. The court heard that Anderson's actions were part of a broader pattern of abuse that targeted vulnerable youths in public spaces.

The court proceedings also revealed the involvement of four other men. Robert Black, aged 71 and formerly residing at Derwent Grange but now without a fixed address, was sentenced to 16 years after being convicted of four counts of indecent assault and one serious sexual offence. Geoff Hillier, 72, of Haswell Avenue, received a 14-year sentence for two indecent assaults, two serious sexual offences, and six counts of possessing indecent images. Peter Watts, aged 72 and living on Oxford Road, was handed a sentence of seven and a half years for five counts of indecent assault. Alan Edmonson, 66, of Ibrox Grove, received a two-year suspended sentence for a single count of indecent assault, which will be served if he commits any further offences within two years.

All victims, who were minors at the time, endured long-term psychological trauma. One survivor publicly recounted the profound impact the abuse had on their life, including struggles with substance misuse, failed relationships, and a pervasive mistrust of adults. The court's judge, Howard Crowson, emphasized that even if some victims appeared to consent, minors are legally incapable of giving true consent. As a result, the judge imposed lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Orders on all five men, restricting their contact with children and limiting their internet access to prevent further harm.

The sentences have been met with relief and some approval from the victims, who acknowledged that many of the offenders will serve only part of their sentences. They also urged other survivors to come forward and seek justice. Detective Inspector Matt Hollingsworth praised the bravery of those who testified during the two-and-a-half-year investigation, known as Operation Krafft, and expressed hope that the convictions will aid in their healing process and help their families move forward from this dark chapter in Hartlepool’s history.
