FORMER SOLDIER FROM SHEERNESS JAILED FOR RAPING YOUNG GIRL
Darren Sutton, a former soldier who completed three tours in Iraq, received an 18-year prison sentence for repeatedly raping a young girl who was particularly vulnerable.
The offenses, which occurred starting in 2006, included acts of abuse while Sutton was stationed in barracks.
He manipulated the girl by offering her alcohol, cigarettes, food, and perfume, and after making her feel special and loved, he sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions.
Despite denying the allegations, Sutton was found guilty by a jury of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against a child.
The victim described enduring lasting trauma, including symptoms of PTSD, emotional numbness, and feelings of detachment.
At sentencing, the judge described Sutton as a dangerous individual, citing his highly devious and manipulative conduct, especially his predatory behavior towards a vulnerable child through cynical grooming and sexual abuse.
Sutton was sentenced to a term of 22 years, with a minimum of 12 years to be served in prison and a four-year period on license after release.
