DARREN SINCLAIR FROM BIRMINGHAM SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND ASSAULT AT LOCAL ICE RINK
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Birmingham community, Darren Sinclair, aged 30, was sentenced to a total of five and a half years in prison following his conviction for grooming and sexually assaulting a teenage skater at the Planet Ice facility located on Pershore Street in Birmingham.The incident came to light after Sinclair, who was involved in managing the ice rink, engaged in inappropriate conduct with a young boy who was only 13 years old at the time.
Sinclair not only performed sexual acts on the boy but also exploited his position of trust to manipulate the young victim, who later became 17 and is protected by legal restrictions from being publicly identified.
Authorities revealed that during the police investigation, they uncovered a disturbing collection of images depicting boys aged between five and 16 on Sinclair’s computer.
These images added to the severity of his crimes and contributed to the judge’s decision to impose a lengthy prison sentence.
Sinclair’s actions were described by Judge Richard Griffith-Jones as stemming from a 'sickening state of mind.' The judge emphasized that Sinclair would remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, underscoring the gravity of his offenses.
During the court proceedings, it was detailed that Sinclair, a resident of Sheringham Road, Kings Norton, Birmingham, had previously been convicted in September of four counts of indecent assault.
He had also pleaded guilty to possessing 14 indecent images on his computer.
The prosecution, led by Morris Cooper, explained that Sinclair and the young victim, who was a frequent visitor to the ice rink on weekends starting in 1998, developed a troubling relationship.
Sinclair would take the boy to secluded areas within the rink, such as the engineering room, where he committed sexual acts.
One incident was notably witnessed by Sinclair’s employer, who chose to remain silent about the matter.
The case was further escalated when the boy confided in his mother about Sinclair’s inappropriate behavior, prompting police to intervene.
During the investigation, officers discovered a collection of personal correspondence between Sinclair and the boy, including a birthday card from Sinclair signed with the words 'You sexy beast.' Defense attorney Christopher Morris argued that Sinclair, who had no prior criminal record, continued to deny any sexual involvement with the boy.
He acknowledged that there might have been mutual attraction but pointed out that the significant age difference rendered any activity potentially unlawful, even if consensual.
Morris also highlighted the personal toll on Sinclair, who had lost his relationship with his partner and was caring for a young son and daughter.
Judge Griffith-Jones condemned Sinclair for betraying the trust of the boy’s parents and abusing his role as an ice rink manager, especially given that most visitors to such facilities are minors.
The judge criticized Sinclair’s attempt to shift blame onto the victim, stating that such defenses would not influence the sentence.
Sinclair was sentenced to five years for four counts of indecent assault and an additional six months for possessing indecent photographs, with the sentences to run consecutively, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes.
