DARREN RYBAK AND THE CUMBRIA PAEDOPHILE HUNTING INCIDENT AT BARROW RAILWAY STATION

A man identified as Darren Rybak found himself at the center of a controversial incident involving vigilante efforts to catch online predators.

The incident occurred at Barrow's railway station, where a group of individuals known as 'paedophile hunters' intercepted Rybak after he engaged in online conversations with an individual posing as a 13-year-old girl.

The group had set up a sting using social media, specifically through a decoy account operated by their members, aiming to catch those attempting to meet minors for illicit purposes.

Video footage capturing the confrontation was subsequently shared on social media by the Elusive Child Protection Unit, a prominent vigilante group involved in such operations.

In the footage, Rybak, aged 50 and residing on Nelson Street in Barrow, is seen being confronted outside the train station.

The group claims that Rybak had traveled from his home location to meet the supposed underage girl, who was indicated in the messaging exchange to have traveled more than two hours from Manchester.

During the confrontation, Rybak admits that his intentions were to take the girl back to his house in order to 'watch movies.' He also confesses to having sent explicit images of himself to the decoy account operated by the group members.

Rybak explicitly states that he would classify himself as a 'paedophile,' further acknowledging his inappropriate and illegal intentions.

The legal proceedings initially scheduled for Rybak took a different turn when he failed to appear before Preston Crown Court for his sentencing, scheduled for the previous Tuesday.

A warrant was issued for his arrest in his absence, but it was later revealed that Rybak had informed his legal representatives that he was unwell and therefore unable to attend court.

As a result, his sentencing has been postponed and is now set for upcoming Friday.

This incident sheds light on the ongoing debate about the methods employed by vigilante groups like the Elusive Child Protection Unit.

Law enforcement authorities in Cumbria have reiterated that they do not endorse such extrajudicial activities.

Peter McCall, the police and crime commissioner for Cumbria, emphasized the importance of legal protocols, stating, 'It's a difficult area - what we don't want is people going around taking the law into their own hands.' He further acknowledged that intelligence provided by such groups has contributed to the apprehension and prosecution of offenders, but he maintained that all investigations should be handled by professional police forces.

The Cumbria Constabulary has reaffirmed its stance that any information related to online child exploitation should be reported directly to the police.

A spokesperson from the police force noted, 'Cumbria Constabulary will act appropriately on any information which is reported.' They also indicated that their policies align with those of the National Police Chiefs Council, which advocate for proper legal procedures in addressing child sexual abuse cases.

The statement concluded by urging members of the public to share any relevant information with law enforcement to ensure offenders are brought to justice in a lawful manner.
