DARREN HOLMES JAILED FOR 22 YEARS IN BRADFORD FOR SICKENING ABUSE OF CHILDREN
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Bradford, Darren Holmes, a 49-year-old man from Manningham Lane, was sentenced to a total of 22 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of two young girls and a boy.The court proceedings revealed the extent of Holmes' depravity, which spanned over two decades, leaving a trail of trauma and suffering for his victims.
Holmes showed no visible emotion as he was led away to the cells following his conviction at Bradford Crown Court.
He was found guilty of nine serious offences, including multiple counts of rape and repeated acts of buggery.
The judge, David Hatton QC, condemned Holmes' actions, stating, "The sickening behaviour in which you engaged can be met only with a significant term of imprisonment." During the trial, it was detailed that Holmes, residing on Manningham Lane, had preyed on a boy aged between four and seven during the early 1990s.
The court heard that Holmes subjected the young boy to a sustained campaign of sexual abuse, which involved repeated acts of buggery.
The judge described Holmes' conduct as a "sustained course of savagery," emphasizing that Holmes threatened and instilled fear in his young victim.
The boy, who longed for help and relief from his torment, was left traumatized by Holmes' actions.
Holmes was sentenced to 12 years for two counts of buggery, indecency with a child, and indecent assault on a male.
Additionally, in 2007, Holmes was convicted of groping and fondling a 13-year-old girl, for which he received a further 12-month sentence.
The judge criticized Holmes' hypocrisy, noting that he had the audacity to criticize the girl for her sexualized behaviour.
The court also heard that Holmes went on to sexually assault another young girl, a 12-year-old, whom he believed to be asleep at the time.
Holmes raped her briefly, an act described by Judge Hatton as both savage and depraved, despite its brevity.
Holmes continued his abuse by further assaulting the girl, leading to a sentence of nine years for this latest set of crimes, to be served consecutively to his previous sentences.
The case's origins trace back more than twenty years, when the first boy accused Holmes of abuse.
At that time, the child was so disturbed by the incidents that he tried to hide from Holmes.
His mother reported the abuse to the police, leading to Holmes' arrest and interview.
However, prosecutors decided not to pursue charges at that time.
It was only years later, when police investigated allegations involving Holmes and a 12-year-old girl, that the case was reopened.
The girl’s mother contacted authorities after discovering her daughter was upset and distressed, which prompted further investigation.
Subsequently, the second girl came forward, revealing that Holmes had abused her three years earlier.
The male victim, now approaching 30, testified about the lasting impact of his trauma, describing how difficult it was to speak about his experiences.
He recounted the emotional scars left by Holmes' actions, emphasizing the deep and lasting effect on his mental health.
Holmes was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
This order prohibits him from contacting his victims and restricts any supervised contact with children.
Judge Hatton described Holmes as "an offender of particular concern" and mandated that he serve a minimum of 11 years in prison, with the possibility of up to 22 years unless the Parole Board determines he is safe for release.
