DAREN SKILLINGS JAILED FOR RAPE IN BRADFORD AFTER CALDERDALE VICTIM EXPERIENCE
A long-standing sex offender from Bradford, Daren Skillings, has been convicted and sentenced to a substantial prison term after a history of offending in Calderdale was finally brought to light.Skillings, aged 57, had previously escaped serious legal consequences despite being interviewed nearly ten years ago by police regarding his abuse of two young girls.
At that time, he denied any wrongdoing, and no further action was taken, allowing him to continue his criminal behavior unchecked.
The case only came back into focus when Skillings was accused of assaulting and raping a third young girl several years later.
This renewed investigation prompted a fresh look into his past offenses, leading to the reopening of the earlier case.
Prosecutor Jayne Beckett addressed Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday, revealing these developments and emphasizing the seriousness of the crimes involved.
Skillings, who currently resides on Sticker Lane in Bradford, faced the court alongside testimonies from his victims.
One of Skillings’ initial victims attended the proceedings and finally saw him sentenced to 11 years in prison.
In addition to the custodial term, the judge ordered an extended license period of one year to follow the prison sentence, ensuring supervision after his release.
This legal measure aims to prevent any possibility of reoffending.
Throughout the trial, emotional victim impact statements were read aloud by Mrs.
Beckett, describing the profound trauma inflicted by Skillings.
For legal reasons, the identities of all three complainants have been protected.
These statements vividly outlined how the abuse caused nightmares, flashbacks, and lasting mental health issues.
One victim expressed her feelings of frustration over the lengthy wait for justice, remarking, “I never got my justice when I first reported it...
I wasn’t believed.” She expressed hope that Skillings would now be unable to harm anyone again, stating that the recent rape could have been avoided.
Another victim described her daily suffering, citing frequent nightmares and flashbacks that severely impacted her quality of life.
The emotional toll of her ordeal was clearly evident, underscoring the lasting damage inflicted by Skillings’ actions.
During the court proceedings, Skillings pleaded guilty to the charges of rape and abuse involving his most recent victim.
The jury also found him guilty of abusing the initial two victims after a trial.
His defense lawyer, Catherine Silverton, expressed that her client had always accepted responsibility for the recent rape and felt deep remorse and shame.
She described him as a hardworking man who appeared to have struggled with alcohol issues, referring to him as a “functioning alcoholic.” Judge Armstrong sentenced Skillings to 11 years in prison and emphasized the significance of the victim impact statements, describing them as “very moving.” He noted that the earlier case was not aggressively pursued at the time of the initial investigations but was revived following the more recent offenses.
The judge further mandated that Skillings serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release, and he will be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order upon his eventual release on license, aimed at safeguarding the community and preventing future offenses.
This case sheds light on issues surrounding the investigation and prosecution of sexual offenses, especially those that go unaddressed for years, and highlights the importance of persistent pursuit of justice for victims regardless of the time elapsed.
