DANNY SHARKEY FROM HAWICK SENTENCED TO FOUR MONTHS FOR ASSAULT ON EX-PARTNER IN NORTH BRIDGE STREET

In a recent court hearing held at Selkirk Sheriff Court, a man from Hawick, identified as 31-year-old Danny Sharkey, was sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting his former partner. The incident took place on December 3 along North Bridge Street in Hawick, where Sharkey's actions resulted in the woman sustaining injuries and falling to the ground.

According to prosecutor Fiona Hamilton, Sharkey approached the woman aggressively and deliberately rammed the bicycle he was riding into the back of her legs. Following this physical assault, he proceeded to verbally abuse her, calling her obscene names in a manner that further distressed her. Hamilton detailed that the woman was visibly shaken, shocked, and upset by the assault, prompting her to report the incident to the police. Evidence collected included photographs of her injuries and CCTV footage that captured parts of the altercation.

During the court proceedings, Sheriff Kevin McCarron addressed Sharkey, who resides on Bright Street in Hawick. The sheriff highlighted Sharkey’s extensive history of domestic offenses, describing it as a “terrible record,” which left him with little choice but to impose a custodial sentence. The sheriff sentenced Sharkey to four months in prison, with the sentence being back-dated to December 16, the date when Sharkey was initially remanded in custody.

In addition to the jail term, Sheriff McCarron issued a Non-Harassment Order that prohibits Sharkey from having any contact with his former partner for a period of two years. This order aims to prevent any further incidents of harassment or violence between the two parties in the future.
