DANIEL WALKER FROM CUMBRIA JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER ONLINE PREDATION EXPOSED

A man employed at a pub in the Eden Valley area of Cumbria has been sentenced to prison after his disturbing online behaviour was uncovered by paedophile hunters who posed as underage girls.

Over a span of ten days, 53-year-old Daniel Walker engaged in a series of inappropriate and illegal exchanges, believing he was communicating with two teenage girls aged 14.

In reality, these were adults operating undercover, posing as minors to catch predators.

Walker, a resident of Greystoke Park Road, Penrith, appeared before Carlisle Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to seven separate offences.

Despite his claims from the dock asserting that he had no sexual interest in children, the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a starkly different picture, leading the judge to dismiss his assertions as untruthful.

Prosecutor Brendan Burke detailed the case, explaining that Walker had initiated contact by sending Facebook friend requests to two profiles explicitly created to appear as 14-year-old girls.

The conversations that ensued included references to typical teenage concerns such as parents and homework, but quickly took a sinister turn.

Walker, who claimed to be 22 years old, engaged in sexually explicit conversations, sending a graphic image of his genitals and a video depicting a child performing a sexual act.

Further, Walker discussed his occupation as a chef and his role managing a pub and restaurant, suggesting that one of the decoys could visit his establishment.

As the conversations progressed, he transitioned to another social media platform known for its encrypted messaging, indicating an attempt to evade detection.

In addition to the online chats, Walker was found to have shared numerous child abuse images, including some depicting a ten-year-old being sexually abused.

The authorities uncovered that he possessed and downloaded hundreds of such images, with 462 classified as Category B and over 800 as Category C.

Among these, 124 images were deemed Category A, representing the most severe level of abuse.

Walker also admitted to possessing extreme pornography involving acts of extreme violence and to distributing child abuse images.

His defence lawyer, Charles Brown, argued that the distribution of images involved only a small number of files shared with a limited audience.

He described Walker as a solitary individual, working in a pub, whose primary online activity was communication rather than physical contact.

Brown acknowledged Walker’s assertion that he had no sexual interest in children but noted that the Probation Service remained skeptical of this claim.

Walker expressed remorse, stating that his online behaviour was a misguided attempt to cope with personal issues.

His lawyer revealed that his life had taken a downward spiral following the tragic death of a child he and his wife had lost shortly after birth in 2006, which led him to withdraw from society.

The internet, he said, became a source of social interaction and solace.

However, Judge Nicholas Barker dismissed Walker’s denial of sexual interest in children, emphasizing that the evidence indicated otherwise.

The judge highlighted that Walker’s communications employed classic grooming techniques, and he was fully aware of the nature of his actions.

The court reviewed the extensive collection of child abuse images found on Walker’s devices and concluded that his offending was significant and serious.

In light of the offences, Walker was sentenced to 33 months in prison.

Additionally, he was ordered to be placed on the Sex Offender Register for life and to be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.

Two volunteers from the Protection of Kids group, who had confronted Walker at his home following the online exposure, attended the court to witness his sentencing, underscoring the community’s concern over such predatory behaviour.
