DANIEL SMITH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN GATESHEAD AND SOUTH TYNESIDE
A man named Daniel Smith, who was once a respected church musical director, has been sentenced to prison for engaging in serious sexual misconduct involving a minor.The events took place in the Gateshead and South Tyneside areas, where Smith was living and working at the time.
Smith, aged 48, was found guilty of multiple offences including elements of grooming and having sex with an underage girl on two separate occasions.
The legal proceedings revealed that these offending acts occurred during a period when he was employed at a church in South Tyneside, and while he was residing in Gateshead, specifically on Sundridge Drive.
According to the court, Smith's inappropriate behaviour included manipulative tactics meant to establish a relationship with the young girl.
Prosecutor Susannah Proctor detailed that at one point, Smith drove the girl to an industrial estate and kissed her, then sent her explicit messages.
She further explained that Smith had invited the girl to his home while his wife was away, where he supplied her with alcohol and continued to kiss her.
The relationship between them escalated to sexual activity, with sexual intercourse taking place on two occasions—initially in Smith’s living room.
After the first encounter, Smith sent a message stating, “I'm glad we did that,” which further betrayed the nature of their relationship.
The second sexual encounter was followed by a third occasion of sexual activity.
The offences only came to light after the girl confided in a counsellor about what had happened, leading to a police report and subsequent investigation.
It was also revealed that Smith had previously received a caution related to another child, for causes including causing or inciting sexual activity.
The impact on the victim was profound.
In her statement, she described enduring severe psychological issues such as PTSD, ongoing depression, and anxiety.
Her relationship later in life was also affected by the trauma experienced during the incidents.
During the court hearing, Smith’s defence attorney, Sam Faulks, emphasized that his client had not offended before and has not reoffended since these incidents, which took place many years ago.
He expressed that Smith was genuinely remorseful and unaware of the extent of harm he caused, hoping that his guilty plea might facilitate some healing for the victim.
Taking into account the gravity of the case and the harm caused, Recorder David Gordon sentenced Daniel Smith to five years and three months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and a restraining order was put in place to prevent any contact with the victim.
The court concluded that Smith’s actions caused significant psychological distress to the girl, highlighting the breach of trust involved given his position within the church community and the influence he wielded over his victim.
