BRADFORD MAN GETS SUSPENDED JAIL FOR CHILD PORN POSSESSION DESPITE TRAGIC PAST
A man who survived a severe car accident that claimed the lives of his mother and sister has received a suspended prison sentence after being found in possession of child pornography.
According to reports, Daniel Letch’s mother, Janet, and his 25-year-old sister, Hester Garner, died in a tragic collision on the A64 near Malton, North Yorkshire, in September 2000.
At the time, Letch was 42 years old and sustained a fractured skull in the crash, which was caused by a slow puncture in one of the Fiesta’s tires.
This defect led to a loss of control and a head-on collision.
An inquest in 2001 determined that the punctured tire was the primary cause of the accident, and it was officially recorded as an accident.
Later, police investigations uncovered that Letch had nearly 200 indecent images of children on his computer, including videos up to ten minutes long, mostly of girls aged 5 to 13.
Authorities seized various computer equipment, including a custom-built gaming tower, during a raid at his home in June.
Letch admitted to viewing the images out of curiosity, describing his actions as 'stupid and compulsive,' and he expressed remorse.
He pleaded guilty to all charges at his initial court appearance, where sentencing guidelines suggested a minimum sentence of one year.
Nonetheless, Judge David Hatton QC sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, along with a requirement to undertake 25 days of rehabilitation.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and adhere to a four-month nighttime curfew.
The court acknowledged his social isolation, mental health difficulties, and his cooperation with authorities, which influenced the decision to suspend the sentence.
The judge emphasized that any future offending could lead to immediate imprisonment.
