DANIEL JEWELL'S CRUELTY IN EXETER: DOG ABUSE AND FAILURE TO SEEK TREATMENT

In the heart of Exeter, a disturbing case of animal cruelty has come to light involving Daniel Christopher David Jewell, born on June 22, 1980, who resides on Larkbeare Road, Exeter EX2 4DJ. Witnesses reported that Jewell was seen rough handling his pet dog, Tyson, an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, in the city centre between April 15 and April 24, 2020. The incident was not only observed by bystanders but was also captured on CCTV footage, which clearly showed Jewell's aggressive handling of the dog.

Jewell's history includes previous convictions for being drunk and disorderly, as well as criminal damage, which added concern to the recent allegations. The footage and eyewitness accounts prompted the RSPCA to intervene. After the charity's involvement, Tyson was taken to a veterinarian for a thorough examination. The vet discovered a severe, untreated wound on Tyson’s neck that had swollen to approximately 8 centimeters. The wound had ulcerated, and necrosis had set in, indicating a significant delay in treatment and a failure to address the injury promptly.

Jewell was informed that his neglect had caused unnecessary suffering to Tyson, a violation of the responsibilities entrusted to him as a pet owner. The failure to seek medical attention for Tyson’s injury was a breach of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which mandates the proper care and treatment of animals. The authorities subsequently brought charges against Jewell, leading to a court hearing where he was sentenced to a six-month community order, including ten days of rehabilitation activities. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £300 in costs and was subjected to a three-year ban on keeping dogs, which expired in March 2024.

In a related and more recent development, it was reported in September 2023 that Jewell’s son, Brian Jewell, aged 19, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for the murder of a homeless man. During the investigation, Brian Jewell also admitted to stabbing his own father, Daniel Jewell, in the head, although the injury was not fatal. This tragic and complex case has garnered significant media attention, highlighting the troubling circumstances surrounding the Jewell family in Exeter and the ongoing issues of violence and animal cruelty associated with them.
