In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Exeter and Hackney, Paul Courtney, a 67-year-old man, has been sentenced to prison for the sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl.

The incident, which took place over a decade ago, involved Courtney molesting the young girl while they were sitting together watching television.

The victim, overwhelmed with fear and distress, desperately sought to escape his grasp by hiding under a bed, clutching her teddy bear tightly as a means of comfort and protection.

According to court reports, the girl also attempted to evade Courtney’s advances by trying to squeeze behind armchairs and a sofa, indicating her clear attempt to find a safe space away from the accused.

The case was brought to light after the girl’s distress and attempts at escape prompted her to seek help, leading to an investigation that uncovered the disturbing details of the abuse.

Paul Courtney, who previously resided at Geneva Close in Exeter, was later found to have moved to Homerton Road in Hackney, London.

He faced six charges of indecent assault, all of which dated back to 2001.

Courtney denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.

However, the jury returned a majority verdict convicting him of the charges.

Judge Erik Salomonsen sentenced Courtney to 30 months in prison, emphasizing the severity of the crimes committed against a vulnerable child.
