BRADFORD SEX OFFENDER DAMIEN SMITH SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In April 2022, a disturbing case emerged from Bradford involving Damien Smith, a 35-year-old man whose heinous actions have left a lasting scar on his victims and the community.Smith was convicted of multiple serious crimes, including the rape of a teenage girl, a violent sexual assault on a young man, and the possession of indecent images of children.
His criminal conduct spanned several years and involved a disturbing collection of illicit material.
According to court proceedings, Smith's most egregious offense was the sexual assault of a young man in 2017.
The assault was described as both violent and shocking by the judge, highlighting the severity of the crime.
However, it was only after Smith's later offenses against a teenage girl came to light that he was prosecuted for his earlier misconduct.
The court heard that Smith's offending was predatory in nature, targeting vulnerable individuals.
While the identities of Smith’s victims remain protected by law, Judge Colin Burn emphasized the profound impact of his crimes, stating that the victims would never forget what they endured.
The judge also noted that Smith’s guilty pleas to all charges were a mitigating factor, though they did little to lessen the gravity of his actions.
The case revealed that Smith had been reported by the teenage girl, who displayed remarkable bravery in coming forward to report his repeated abuse.
During the investigation, police discovered on Smith’s phone a collection of indecent images of children, some classified as Category A, which is the most serious classification.
These images depicted the rape and torture of children, adding a deeply disturbing dimension to his crimes.
Additionally, recordings of children using a bathroom were found, further illustrating the extent of his depravity.
Currently, Smith is in custody at HMP Leeds, where he has pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including rape of a child, sexual assault, voyeurism, and possession of indecent images of children.
His sentencing was handed down by Judge Burn, who sentenced him to a total of ten and a half years in prison.
The judge also explained that Smith would be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
In a victim impact statement, the teenage girl expressed her feelings of anger and betrayal, stating, “I feel a lot of anger towards Damien for what he has put me through.” Her words underscore the lasting trauma inflicted by Smith’s actions, and the community continues to grapple with the repercussions of his crimes.
