CLARE MARQUIS FROM LEIGH-ON-SEA ESCAPES JAIL AFTER LURING TEENAGE BOY THROUGH ONLINE GAMING NETWORKS

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, Claire Marquis, a 33-year-old woman, was found guilty of engaging in a prolonged and manipulative online relationship with a 14-year-old boy from Cheshire. The case, which unfolded over an 18-month period, revealed a pattern of deceit and sexual misconduct facilitated through popular gaming platforms.

Marquis, who is a mother of two, used the internet as her tool to lure the young teenager. She initially made contact with him via the PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks, where she falsely presented herself as a 24-year-old nurse. Her deception was carefully crafted to appear trustworthy and appealing to the impressionable teenager, who believed he was communicating with an adult woman.

According to court proceedings at Chelmsford Crown Court, Marquis and the boy exchanged mobile phone numbers after their initial online interactions. It was during this exchange that Marquis crossed ethical boundaries by sending explicit images of herself to the teenager. In return, she persuaded him to send her explicit photographs, further entrenching the inappropriate relationship.

The court heard that Marquis also encouraged the young boy to watch her perform sexual acts online, a disturbing manipulation that added a layer of cruelty to her actions. She even suggested the possibility of arranging a hotel meeting for sexual encounters, although this plan was never realized. Her actions demonstrated a calculated effort to exploit the teenager’s trust and emotional vulnerability.

The illicit relationship persisted for nearly a year and a half before it was ultimately exposed. The revelation came when Marquis’s husband discovered her online activities and chose to report her to the authorities, as well as informing the teenage victim. The young boy, who had fallen deeply in love with her, was left devastated and emotionally distressed upon learning the truth about her deception.

In court, Marquis was described as having committed acts that were both sexual and cruel, with the judge, Christopher Ball QC, condemning her behavior as 'sinister.' Despite the severity of her actions, she was spared immediate imprisonment after pleading guilty to five sexual offences. Instead, she received a 12-month suspended sentence, meaning she would not serve time in prison unless she committed further offences.

Additionally, Marquis was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years. She was also given a care and intervention order aimed at monitoring her behavior and preventing future misconduct. Her previous admissions included two counts of inciting a child to perform sexual acts, two counts of causing a child to watch sexual acts, and possession of indecent images of children.

Judge Ball emphasized the gravity of her misconduct, stating, ‘The offences you have admitted occurred over a considerable period of time and have elements to them which are both sexual and which are actually cruel. You quite wittingly came into this relationship over the internet with a young boy and led him down an emotional path which has caused him emotional upset and anguish. You, as a mature woman, were in control and had the power to stop it at any moment. It was a scheme dreamt up to give you some degree of excitement in what was becoming a dull and monotonous life. But you had the good sense to stop short of engaging him directly and had the good sense to plead guilty.’

Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant from Essex Police’s online investigation team issued a warning to parents and guardians. He stressed the importance of vigilance regarding children’s activities on gaming networks and social media platforms. ‘It is hoped that this investigation will highlight to parents the risks associated with the use of gamer networks. The risks of social networking are regularly reported on, but parents should be aware that the gamer networks are just another form of this. I would encourage parents to take an interest in what their children are doing and who they are communicating with when on these networks,’ he said.
