JOHN BRIDGE FROM LEIGH-ON-SEA AND WESTCLIFF ESCAPES CHARGES DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ARREST
In February 2004, a disturbing case emerged involving John Bridge, a man with connections to Leigh-on-Sea and Westcliff, who was allowed to continue working with children despite serious allegations. Bridge, aged 53, was arrested after authorities discovered child pornography on his computer. The police confirmed that he admitted to the offence, and as a result, he was issued an official police caution.Bridge, who is married and operates a home education business, was placed on the sex offenders' register for a period of five years. Despite this, he was suspended from his role as a governor at nursery and primary schools in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. However, law enforcement officials decided not to press formal charges against him.
Remarkably, the police caution did not prevent Bridge from continuing to offer private tutoring services from his residence in nearby Westcliff. This allowed him to provide coaching in various classroom subjects to pupils, often without the knowledge or oversight of parents. Many parents, unaware of his background, had been hiring him to assist their children with their studies.
Bridge's arrest was part of the broader Operation Ore, a global crackdown targeting internet predators. During the investigation, authorities uncovered his credit card details on a US-based pay-to-view website, which contributed to the case against him.
An Essex County Council spokesperson expressed concern over the situation, stating, "As he’s on the register he’s banned from teaching in state schools, but there’s nothing to stop him teaching privately and no law compelling him to tell parents of his background. It is worrying that an apparent loophole allows him to carry on working with children privately without their parents having knowledge of his past."
Police officials clarified that cautions are only issued when individuals agree to accept them and admit guilt. John Bridge was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
