CHRISTOPHER O’DONOVAN FROM WEYMOUTH ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY ON DVD
In a case that has spanned over three years, Christopher Thomas O’Donovan, a 67-year-old resident of Weymouth, has narrowly avoided imprisonment after being found in possession of highly illegal and disturbing material. The incident traces back to August 10, 2017, when police officers in Weymouth responded to a tip-off indicating that O’Donovan was involved in sharing illicit pornography online, which was a clear violation of a previously imposed sexual harm prevention order.
O’Donovan had already been placed on the sex offenders register following a conviction in February 2017 for possession of illegal images.
The police action that day was part of an ongoing investigation into his activities.
Officers located him at a community centre in Weymouth, where he was detained on suspicion of breaching his order.
During a subsequent search of his vehicle, law enforcement officials discovered a portable DVD player in the trunk.
When an officer examined the contents of the DVD, they uncovered a series of extremely disturbing movies.
These films depicted a female engaging in various sexual acts with a dog, a discovery that shocked the authorities and added a grave dimension to the case.
In police interviews, O’Donovan admitted that the DVD player was his and that the disc bore his handwriting.
However, he claimed to be unaware of the illegal content stored on the disc.
Despite his assertions, the evidence was damning.
The DVD contained multiple films, each showcasing disturbing acts involving a woman and an animal, which are classified as extreme pornography under the law.
O’Donovan’s legal history is extensive.
He previously pleaded guilty at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on February 12, 2021, to possessing four extreme pornographic films.
His criminal record includes convictions from 2008 for making indecent images of children and possessing indecent images, as well as a 2017 conviction at Bournemouth Crown Court for possession of indecent images of children, possession of extreme animal pornography, and a prohibited image of a child.
These prior convictions highlight a pattern of disturbing behavior.
Judge Robert Pawson expressed his disbelief at the lengthy delay between O’Donovan’s initial arrest and his eventual sentencing, describing the three-and-a-half-year gap as “almost unbelievable.” The judge also criticized the justice system’s handling of the case, noting that the delay was “wholly unreasonable” and had a detrimental impact on the pursuit of justice.
He pointed out the irony that O’Donovan’s community order had been previously lifted for good behavior, only for him to reoffend shortly thereafter.
During sentencing, Judge Pawson highlighted the disturbing nature of the images and videos involved, emphasizing that although the woman depicted was not forced, victims of such acts are often coerced or harmed.
The judge also remarked on the pattern of reoffending, noting that O’Donovan had previously received community orders that were later revoked due to further offenses.
The judge expressed skepticism about O’Donovan’s honesty, suggesting he was attempting to deceive probation officers.
Ultimately, O’Donovan was sentenced to a two-month prison term, suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for seven years, required to pay costs of £350, and a victim surcharge of £140.
The DVD player and disc were confiscated and ordered to be destroyed, ensuring they could not be used again.
In a related incident from February 2021, police found a DVD containing similar extreme material involving a dog in O’Donovan’s car.
This discovery was made during a search following another breach of his sexual harm prevention order.
The police confirmed that the DVD contained four films of an adult woman engaging in sexual acts with a dog.
O’Donovan admitted ownership of the disc, which bore his handwriting, but claimed ignorance of its illegal content.
The investigation into this material was delayed due to the need for detailed analysis of the files, which contributed to the lengthy period before charges were brought.
O’Donovan’s criminal record includes multiple convictions related to indecent images and extreme pornography.
His case is scheduled to be heard at Bournemouth Crown Court on March 12, 2021, where he will face further sentencing.
Meanwhile, he remains on unconditional bail, awaiting the next phase of legal proceedings.
