CHRISTOPHER MORGAN'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN PORTSLADE: VICTIM BREAKS SILENCE AFTER 14-YEAR SENTENCE
In August 2009, a deeply disturbing case of sexual abuse emerged from the seaside town of Portslade, where a man named Laurence bravely shared his harrowing experience in the hope of encouraging others to come forward and seek justice.Laurence revealed that he was subjected to sexual abuse by his grandmother’s partner, Christopher Morgans, who was 61 years old at the time. The abuse took place over a period from when Laurence was just ten years old until he reached thirteen. The trauma inflicted by Morgans left a lasting scar on Laurence’s life, and he has spoken openly about the emotional toll it has taken on him.
Just days after Morgans was sentenced to 14 years in prison, Laurence chose to waive his right to anonymity, a decision driven by his desire to inspire other victims of similar crimes to come forward and seek justice. He expressed that the memories of what happened continue to haunt him, stating, “I don’t think I will ever forget what happened. Some of it I still relive in my mind and it still haunts me to this day.”
Laurence explained that initially, he believed he could handle the trauma on his own, but as time went on, he realized that confronting his past was necessary for his healing. “At first I thought I could deal with it by myself. But the more I thought about it, I knew I couldn’t go on until I had dealt with the past,” he said. His courage in speaking out is aimed at giving others the confidence to do the same, to confront their own painful histories.
The first time Laurence discussed the abuse publicly was during an argument with his mother in 2007. With her support and the assistance of Sussex Police, he was able to provide evidence in court, which ultimately led to Morgans’ conviction. The case was heard at Lewes Crown Court, where Morgans was found guilty of three counts of raping a male under 16 and three counts of indecently assaulting a boy under 14. The court proceedings revealed that the abuse occurred while Laurence’s grandmother was at work, leaving him vulnerable and alone with Morgans.
Laurence reflected on the difficulty of coming forward, acknowledging that it took a long time to find the strength to speak out. “It wasn’t easy to come forward. That’s why it took so long. But at the end of the day, it has all been worth it,” he said. Despite the length of the sentence, he emphasized that it does not erase the pain inflicted upon him. “The sentence was longer than I thought but it doesn’t take away what he did to me. I’m just glad justice has been done as it stops him doing it again to anybody else,” Laurence added.
He also shared that before revealing his ordeal, he struggled to focus on his education, career, and relationships. Now, however, he feels optimistic about the future and is able to look forward with hope.
Detective Constable Tami Rubens of Sussex Police praised Laurence’s bravery, stating, “Laurence has shown tremendous courage in reporting to police the dreadful events which happened to him when he was a child. I hope the verdict and sentence go a small way at least to helping Laurence and his immediate family move on from what has happened, and they can start to rebuild their lives.”
