CHRISTOPHER GRAY FROM BIRMINGHAM FOUND GUILTY OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CHIPPING NORTON
In a disturbing case that unfolded in the quiet town of Chipping Norton, Christopher Gray, a 19-year-old resident of Birmingham, has been convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in broad daylight. The incident occurred on August 1 of the previous year along London Road, a well-traveled area in the town.
Gray had initially denied the charges, claiming that the incident was merely 'an everyday accident' and insisting he was innocent of any wrongdoing.
His defense argued that what happened was unintentional and not malicious.
However, after nearly nine and a half hours of deliberation, the jury at Oxford Crown Court reached a unanimous verdict, finding Gray guilty of the sexual assault.
The court heard during the trial that the victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was walking with a friend around 1 pm.
The two girls were on their way to Tickittyshake, a popular local spot for milkshakes, when Gray, who was on his lunch break from a laboring job, noticed them.
Witnesses described how Gray approached the girls, walking ahead of them before suddenly turning around and 'grabbing' one of the girls in a sexual manner.
Details of the assault revealed that Gray's actions were abrupt and unprovoked, leaving the young girl distressed.
The following day, Gray was seen again in Chipping Norton, this time with the girls, who were then accompanied by an adult.
Recognizing him, the girls confronted Gray, and a brief altercation ensued.
During this confrontation, the adult involved took photographs of Gray, who claimed that the incident was just a 'bump' caused by a collision.
Gray's attempt to downplay the incident was evident when he described the assault as a minor bump from a collision, dismissing the severity of his actions.
The court considered these statements but ultimately found sufficient evidence to convict him of the sexual assault.
Presiding Judge Maria Lamb agreed to adjourn the case for sentencing, which is scheduled for September 6.
A pre-sentence report will be prepared to evaluate all possible options for sentencing, considering the gravity of the offense and Gray's background.
The community and the victim await justice as the legal process continues.
