NETHERTON PAEDOPHILE CHRISTOPHER EWAN FACES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY IN LIVERPOOL
In September 2021, Christopher Ewan, a man from Netherton, Liverpool, was sentenced by a judge to serve 10 months in prison, though this sentence was suspended for a period of two years. Additionally, Ewan was ordered to complete a 40-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement as part of his sentencing. The court also mandated that he must register as a sex offender and adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next decade, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.Earlier, in August 2021, Ewan, a hospital nurse working in the accident and emergency department at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool, publicly admitted to having a persistent sexual interest in children. His admission came amid revelations that during the COVID-19 lockdown period, he had downloaded over 100 illicit images and videos depicting child abuse, including extreme pornography involving bestiality. Ewan, a married father of four, was found to have engaged in these activities while employed at the hospital, raising serious concerns about his conduct and the safety of vulnerable individuals.
Following a police investigation into his online activities, authorities confirmed that Ewan, aged 45 and residing in Netherton, had admitted to downloading and possessing a significant number of illegal files. He appeared before Liverpool Crown Court to face sentencing, where it was revealed that he had previously provided conflicting statements to the Probation Service. Prosecutor Christopher Hopkins detailed that Ewan had confessed to downloading 137 Category A files—comprising 127 images and ten videos—between March 3 and June 23 of the previous year. Category A files are classified as the most serious, involving child rape and other severe abuse material.
Furthermore, Ewan also admitted to downloading 219 Category B images during a prior magistrates' court hearing last month. However, the prosecution highlighted discrepancies in the records, indicating that Ewan may have pleaded guilty to duplicate charges related to a prohibited image of a child. This inconsistency suggested that the case might need to be returned to the magistrates' court for clarification and correction.
Judge Recorder Stan Reiz, QC, addressed these issues, noting, “On the face of it, the defendant has been charged with two criminal offences for the same act.” The court also discussed complications regarding Ewan's plea concerning Category C indecent images. Prosecutor Mr. Lennon explained that Ewan had indeed pleaded guilty to all charges before the lower court, but due to errors in the documentation, the case would be remitted back to the magistrates for proper rectification.
It was agreed that Ewan's case would be sent back to the magistrates, with a new hearing scheduled for September 3 at the crown court for sentencing. The judge emphasized that the paperwork errors were not Ewan's fault but stressed the importance of procedural correctness. Ewan was remanded on bail, though the judge warned that the final sentence could still involve immediate custody, with all sentencing options remaining open.
Since the allegations came to light, Ewan has been absent from his employment, with reports indicating he has been off sick. He is currently suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which is likely to prohibit him from practicing as a nurse in the future, effectively ending his career in healthcare. The case underscores the ongoing concerns about individuals in trusted professions who commit such grave offenses, and the legal proceedings continue to unfold as authorities seek justice and public safety.
