MARK WARD FROM NETHERTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN MERSEYSIDE

In a significant case that has drawn widespread attention across Merseyside, Mark Ward, a resident of Netherton, has been sentenced to a total of 17 and a half years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against two young boys. The crimes, which spanned over a decade, involved a disturbing pattern of abuse that took place between 1979 and 1982, as well as from 1992 to 1995.

Ward, who has a long history of criminal behavior related to sexual offenses, pleaded guilty to 20 counts of sexual abuse. These charges included indecent assault and other sexual acts inflicted upon the two boys, both of whom were only 12 years old at the time of the most serious offenses. The court proceedings took place at Liverpool Crown Court, where Judge Graham Morrow presided over the case.

In his sentencing, Judge Morrow chose not to impose a life sentence but instead delivered consecutive terms of 10 years and seven-and-a-half years for the most severe crimes—namely, the rapes of the two boys. The other charges, which ranged from four to nine years, are to run concurrently, meaning Ward will serve these sentences simultaneously. The judge emphasized the gravity of the offenses and the impact on the victims, who demonstrated remarkable bravery in coming forward.

Ward, aged 53, has a troubling criminal history. He has previously been convicted of similar offenses, including the indecent assault of three boys under the age of 14 and a sexual assault on a boy during the early to mid-1990s. His criminal record also includes a conviction for the rape of a young man in Warrington in 2007, for which he was sentenced in 2009 to imprisonment for public protection. Despite this, the court did not impose another public protection order, as Ward must be deemed safe to re-enter society before any such order could be lifted.

Throughout his criminal career, Ward has used multiple aliases, including Peter Catterall, Peter Johnson, and Peter King, before adopting the name Mark Ward. His history of abuse and deception underscores the complexity of his case. The recent charges emerged after the victims, who had endured years of abuse, confided in loved ones about their traumatic experiences. It was through these disclosures that authorities were able to bring Ward to justice.

The court heard that Ward would manipulate the young boys by offering cigarettes, beer, and toys to keep them silent during the years of abuse. One victim described feeling as though Ward, who he knew as Mr. Catterall, still exerted control over him, even years after the abuse had ended. This statement highlighted the lasting psychological scars inflicted by Ward’s actions.

Judge Morrow acknowledged Ward’s guilty plea, which was entered on the day of his trial in July, and reduced his sentence by two and a half years as a result. The judge expressed the view that Ward’s remorse appeared genuine, but also noted that the plea was influenced by the victims’ anxiety and the pressure of having to testify in court. The decision to accept the plea was seen as a way to spare the victims from the ordeal of giving evidence.

Detective Paul Jones, who led the investigation into Ward’s crimes, commented on the case, stating, “The victims in this case suffered terribly at the hands of Ward both at the time he carried out his crimes against them and in the many years since.” He praised their courage and bravery in coming forward and helping to bring Ward to justice.

In addition to his prison sentence, Ward was subject to a sexual offences prevention order, which was an extension of a previous order issued in 2009. This order prohibits him from contacting or being alone with any males under the age of 18, as well as from residing with or under the same roof as any such individuals. Furthermore, Ward is now legally restricted from using any name other than Mark Ward, aiming to prevent any further attempts at deception or evasion of the law.
