TRACY WELSH, CHAYNE AND TYLER MASON HORRIFICALLY CRUEL TO NORTHAMPTON DOG BUDDY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Northampton community, Tracy Ann Welsh, along with her son Tyler Mason and his father Chayne Robert Mason, were involved in a heinous act of animal cruelty that culminated in the tragic death of their pet dog, Buddy. The incident took place at an address on Harborough Road, Northampton, where the family’s neglect and brutality came to light.
On November 11, 2021, Chayne Mason and his son Tyler Mason took their four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Buddy, outside their home.
In a shocking display of violence, both men used a nail gun to shoot Buddy in the head twice.
Believing that their cruel act had ended Buddy’s life, they left him lying outside their residence.
However, the following day, they discovered that Buddy had survived the assault, albeit with severe injuries.
In a further act of callousness, they removed one of the nails embedded in his skull, causing him to bleed and prolonging his suffering.
Rather than seeking immediate veterinary assistance, Tracy Welsh cleaned the dog’s wound and administered painkillers, choosing to ignore the severity of Buddy’s injuries.
It was only two days later that a concerned third party contacted the RSPCA, raising alarms about Buddy’s condition.
Animal welfare officers from the RSPCA, along with Northamptonshire Police, responded swiftly to the scene at the Mason-Welsh residence.
Upon arrival, they found Buddy in a state of extreme distress, clearly suffering from the injuries inflicted upon him.
Emergency veterinary treatment was administered, but sadly, Buddy’s injuries were too severe.
Despite efforts to save him, the dog was put to sleep to end his pain and suffering.
The investigation into the incident was led by PC Chloe Gillies of the Rural Crime Team, who expressed her outrage at the cruelty inflicted upon Buddy.
She stated, “Buddy was treated in such a cruel and inhumane way.
He was not treated like a loved family pet and instead he was left to suffer in pain.” During court proceedings, both Chayne Mason and Tracy Welsh pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.
The court heard that the family claimed Buddy was sometimes aggressive, which they cited as a reason for their actions.
However, authorities emphasized that there are humane and lawful ways to address behavioral issues in dogs, and that taking such violent measures was entirely unacceptable.
As part of their sentencing, Chayne Mason and Tracy Welsh were each ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.
They were also required to pay fines—£500 from Mason and £292 from Welsh—along with a victim surcharge of £95 and legal costs amounting to £85.
Tyler Mason, who was also involved in the attack, was not ordered to pay any financial penalty due to a lack of financial means.
All three individuals were collectively banned from owning or being involved in the care of any dogs for the next five years, a measure aimed at preventing future cruelty.
This tragic case underscores the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of cruelty.
Northampton residents are reminded that cruelty to animals is a serious offense, and authorities are committed to ensuring that such acts are met with appropriate legal action to protect vulnerable animals like Buddy.
