YOUNG MAN WHO STRANGLED HIS OWN MOTHER JAILED
A 21-year-old man with multiple prior convictions has been sentenced to prison for strangling his mother following an argument.Callum Hunter from Wallingford’s Goldsmiths Lane was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on April 17.
The charges relate to an incident in Wallingford on February 4, where Hunter committed several offences.
He admitted to breaching a restraining order, intentionally strangling his mother, and driving uninsured.
The court was told that the victim was his mother.
Although no pre-sentence report was made, the court aimed to sentence him quickly.
Prosecutor Alexandra Bushell explained Hunter was subject to a restraining order preventing contact with his mother after a harassment conviction in December.
Hunter had been living with his grandmother, with occasional visits from his mother.
Ms Bushell reported that during an argument, Mrs Hunter saw Hunter smoking drugs, and he responded by grabbing her around the throat and throwing her into the living room.
Mrs Hunter had to shield her mother and sister from Hunter, who also slammed and kicked a front door out of frustration, creating fear and anxiety.
Police responded, and Hunter fled on a motorbike but was arrested the next day.
Hunter’s record includes four previous convictions for six offences, all involving his mother.
The prosecution noted these occurred in a domestic abuse context.
Nick Cotter, mitigating, stated Hunter had been in custody since February and described him as calmer than before.
He mentioned Hunter had been assaulted multiple times and had paid off a drug debt, with his mother’s help.
Cotter suggested Hunter is immature but loved by his mother, and his time in custody had helped him focus.
The judge condemned Hunter’s actions, especially strangulation, and sentenced him to 18 months in prison, a restraining order prohibiting him from visiting his grandmother, and six penalty points.
