BRIAN MAY FROM DALKEITH TARGETED BY VIGILANTE MOB AFTER PAEDOPHILE CLAIMS

In March 1998, a tense and emotionally charged incident unfolded in the town of Dalkeith, Midlothian, when a local man named Brian May became the focus of a fierce community backlash following allegations of child abuse. The situation escalated rapidly as residents, outraged by the accusations, organized a large-scale demonstration aimed at confronting May and expressing their anger.

On that Monday evening, approximately 150 residents gathered in the streets of Dalkeith, rallying outside May's residence on Woodburn Avenue. The protest was sparked by claims that May had molested a 13-year-old paper boy, a serious allegation that deeply disturbed the community. The young boy reportedly confided in relatives that May had been abusing him since the previous summer, prompting immediate concern and outrage among local residents.

Brian May, aged 50 at the time, had previously served a nine-month prison sentence in 1994 for eight separate offences of indecency involving boys aged between eight and eleven. Some of these offences reportedly took place in changing rooms during football training sessions that May supervised, while others occurred within his own home. The community's anger was palpable, with demonstrators hurling eggs and stones at May's flat windows, which was located in Woodburn Avenue. The atmosphere was charged with hostility, with chants calling for severe punishment, including one where protesters shouted that May should be hanged by the genitals.

Mary, a 57-year-old resident of Dalkeith and one of the organizers of the protest, expressed her unwavering stance. She stated, “The poor boy is terrified in case May is going to come after him. It was my decision to expose May to let people know he was here. I told people I wanted them to demonstrate outside his home. I wanted them to see where he lived and know that he was doing the same thing again.” Mary emphasized her willingness to repeat the protest if May returned to the area, asserting, “If I had kept quiet and not told anybody, he would still be sitting up there and this may have happened to some other boy. I have no regrets. I would do the same thing for any bairn.”

Mary was supported by other local mothers who shared her fury and concern over May’s return to Dalkeith after serving time in prison. Margo, aged 60, voiced her fears, saying, “I have five grandchildren who all live nearby, and it could have happened to them. If he comes back here, he would not live long.” Sylvia, a 35-year-old mother of two, added her anxiety, stating, “It’s getting to the stage I feel frightened to let my kids out.”

During the demonstration, Brian May was not at home; however, his wife Carrie and their teenage son had to be escorted to safety by police officers amid the chaos. The family was subsequently forced into hiding for their safety. Authorities responded by boarding up May’s flat and an adjoining property, with police maintaining a watchful presence over the premises to prevent further incidents.

Adding to the community’s distress, the mother of one of May’s alleged victims expressed relief that he had left Dalkeith. She revealed that her son, now 16, was only eight when May began abusing him. She stated, “We knew he was back living here but kept quiet to give him a second chance. He doesn’t deserve a third.” Her words underscored the community’s collective desire for justice and safety, reflecting the deep scars left by May’s past actions and the community’s determination to protect its children from potential harm.
