BRAIN CLEMENTS FROM BILLINGHAM AND DARLINGTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Billingham and Darlington, Brian Clements, a 59-year-old man, was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images of children, along with other illegal and extreme material. Despite the severity of the evidence against him, Clements was spared immediate imprisonment, with the court opting for a suspended sentence that emphasizes rehabilitation and community safety.

According to reports from Teesside Crown Court, the charges against Clements include the possession of nearly 1,000 indecent images of children, as well as prohibited cartoon-style images and extreme pornography involving animals. The investigation was initiated after police received specific information that led them to search a property in Billingham, where electronic devices belonging to Clements were seized and examined.

During the search, authorities uncovered a disturbing cache of digital material stored across two laptops. The images included 965 indecent photographs of children, categorized into different levels of severity: 139 in Category A, which is considered the most serious, 114 in Category B, and 712 in Category C. In addition to these, officers found 635 prohibited images, which are typically cartoon or animated depictions, and 439 images depicting extreme pornography involving animals.

At the time of his arrest, Clements, who is married and a grandfather, initially remained silent but later admitted to the charges. It was noted that he had no prior criminal record, which may have influenced the court’s decision. His defense lawyer, Nicci Horton, described him as a family-oriented man with a good relationship with his wife. She emphasized that Clements has children and grandchildren and insisted that there was no sexual attraction to children, suggesting that these actions were out of character.

Horton further stated that Clements’s family viewed his offenses as uncharacteristic and highlighted his long-standing good character and work ethic. She argued that he was not a danger to the community and that his actions did not indicate a propensity for contact offenses involving children.

However, the presiding judge, Simon Bourne-Arton QC, expressed concern over the case, noting that Clements appeared to attempt to justify his behavior. The judge underscored the gravity of the crimes, emphasizing that real children are victims of such abuse and that the possession of these images is a form of ongoing harm.

Judge Bourne-Arton stated, “That is a worrying aspect of the case. They are real children. Some child somewhere is having to undergo that abuse. You are getting sexual gratification from a child being abused.”

While acknowledging the seriousness of the offenses, the judge decided that a custodial sentence was not necessary at this stage. Instead, he sentenced Clements to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, coupled with a supervision order. This decision aims to balance punishment with the opportunity for rehabilitation, ensuring that Clements remains under community oversight while addressing the underlying issues that led to his offending.

Clements, of Acacia Street in Darlington, now faces the ongoing scrutiny of community supervision, with authorities monitoring his behavior to prevent any future offenses. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable victims.
