May 2011 Sheerness man Billy Evans found guilty of 11 child sex charges A paedophile who subjected two young girls to three years of systematic abuse was given a 15 year sentence at Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday 21 April. Billy Evans, of St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, was found guilty of 11 counts of sexual abuse against the two girls during a seven day trial in March. The 28-year-old electrician had denied three counts of indecent assault on a female under 16, three counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, one count of indecency with a child under the age of 16, three counts of rape of a child under 13 and one count of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. On 21 April he was back before Judge David Griffith-Jones QC, who told him his actions, which took place from 2003 to 2006, were likely to cause serious psychological conflicts and issues for his victims. He also added that Evans did not spare his victims and showed no empathy to them by forcing them to relive their ordeal. Alongside the 15 year jail sentence Evans will stay on the sex offenders’ register for life. He was also given a sexual offences prevention order, banning him from unsupervised contact with children. The investigation was conducted by officers based in the Public Protection Unit at Sittingbourne Police Station. Investigating officer Detective Constable Emily Hooper said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the abuse. ‘Evans’ actions were beyond reproach and the damage he has caused to these two girls and their families may never be fully repaired,’she said. ‘For three years he subjected two young girls to unimaginable abuse. His actions were cruel, degrading, humiliating and deeply, deeply damaging.’ DC Hooper paid tribute to the bravery of the girls and their families in giving evidence against Evans during last month’s trial. ‘Nothing can turn back the clock and undo the damage he has caused, but I hope the girls and their families may seek some comfort in the length of his sentence and the knowledge that he will stay on the sex offender’s register for life. ‘I also hope that the sentence sends a strong message to others who abuse children that they will be pursued by Kent Police and brought to justice,’ added DC Hooper.
