BERNARD CRATHORNE AND SHOCKING CHILD ENDANGERMENT IN NORTHAMPTON
A 90-year-old man from Northampton, who is a registered sex offender, has been sentenced to prison after repeatedly breaching a court order designed to protect children.Bernard Alan Crathorne, formerly residing in Grosvenor Gardens, Northampton, was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that strictly limited his interactions with minors.
Despite these restrictions, Crathorne was involved in multiple concerning incidents in August 2020.
The court record shows that Crathorne engaged with numerous children during the specified period, in direct violation of his court-mandated conditions.
On several occasions, he approached young children and attempted to entice them with offers of sweets and money, actions that clearly breach the restrictive measures intended to prevent him from having unsupervised contact with minors.
These interactions raised significant alarm among authorities and community members, given Crathorne's known history as a sex offender.
Following his breaches, law enforcement swiftly acted, arresting Crathorne and subsequently charging him with multiple offences.
The charges included four counts of breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, an additional count of sexual assault committed against a female under the age of 13, and a further charge alleging that he incited or caused a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
These charges underscored the severity of Crathorne's actions and the danger he posed.
Crathorne was remanded into custody and chose to plead guilty to all charges.
His plea led to a sentencing hearing at Northampton Crown Court, where on Friday, October 14, he received a custodial sentence of four years and six months.
Recognizing the ongoing risk he poses, the court also imposed an extended licence period of five years.
This extended licence means Crathorne will remain under supervision until just before he turns 100, aiming to safeguard the community from any further offending.
Detective Constable Angie Torley, the lead investigator on the case, expressed her relief and justified the lengthy sentence.
She emphasized that Crathorne remains a highly dangerous individual, and his incarceration is vital for public safety.
In her statement, she highlighted the importance of community cooperation, noting that the children involved demonstrated remarkable bravery in coming forward to report his misconduct, despite the trauma it could have caused.
DC Torley also pointed out the critical role of the police in maintaining a zero-tolerance stance toward breaches of protective orders.
She reiterated that any violation results in immediate custody, reinforcing that offenders like Crathorne will face the full weight of the law.
Her comments reflect the police force's unwavering commitment to justice and the protection of Northamptonshire's residents.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by repeat offenders and the importance of vigilant enforcement of court orders designed to shield vulnerable populations.
The police and judicial authorities continue to prioritize the safety of children and the community as a whole, holding individuals like Bernard Crathorne accountable for their actions.
