FORMER RUGBY COACH BENJAMIN SEMPLE JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
A man from Lawrence Weston, previously involved in coaching girls' rugby, has been sentenced to prison for abusing a young girl.
Benjamin John Semple, a father of three and an electrical engineer residing on Lawrence Weston Road, was alone with a 15-year-old girl when he inappropriately touched her and attempted to persuade her to touch him.
During the trial at Bristol Crown Court, Semple denied any misconduct but was found guilty by a jury of sexual assault and engaging in sexual activities with a minor.
Presiding Judge Mr.
James Bromige sentenced him to six and a half years in prison, remarking that the girl was left terrified.
The court also ordered Semple to regularly report his location to the police for life, imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to curb reoffending, and considered restrictions on his employment involving children or vulnerable adults.
Prosecutor Mary McCarthy highlighted that the victim experienced nightmares after the attack and, despite receiving counseling, her recovery had been slow.
Defense solicitor Eddie Steele acknowledged the gravity of the sentence, noting that Semple understood he faced a lengthy jail term and that he had support from his family and community.
This case underscores the criminal nature of the offences and the court’s focus on protecting potential future victims through strict penalties and supervision.
