GATESHEAD MAN SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AND STRANGULATION
A domestic abuser named Benjamin Carr has committed a violent attack on his former partner, involving dragging her around by her hair and attempting to strangle her.The incident occurred after they met in a car park on July 30 this year, where Carr, 29, met with the woman to collect belongings.
He immediately attacked her, dragging her by the hair, punching her in the head, and destroying her phone.
She managed to escape to a friend's house, but Carr followed her and later entered her home without permission through a window.
He then subjected her to further abuse, including banging her head off a wall, squeezing her cheeks, and strangling her until she nearly lost consciousness.
The woman described feeling terrified and reported staying in a hotel afterward due to her fear.
Carr, of Deckham Terrace, Deckham, had been in a relationship with the woman for around two-and-a-half years but had recently broken up with her.
His court case at Newcastle Crown Court revealed he had 11 previous convictions for 20 offences, such as affray, possession of a blade, battery, assault of an emergency worker, and criminal damage, the last of which was committed against the same woman.
Carr had denied the offences but was found guilty following a trial at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.
He was sentenced to 20 months in prison and received a five-year restraining order.
The judge, Recorder Paul Reid, stated Carr had a history of violence against partners and had built up a substantial record of offences.
The court highlighted that Carr's relationship with the victim was toxic, and he led a chaotic lifestyle involving substance abuse.
The attack left the woman feeling terrified, prompting her to avoid returning to her own home.
