DARLINGTON MAN JAILED FOR LIFE AFTER MURDERING PARTNER IN ALCOHOL-FUELED ATTACK
The family of Lea Holiday, a mother of two who was murdered in her own home, expressed their grief and stated that more should have been done to shield her from her abusive and alcoholic partner.Lea was violently assaulted, strangled, and stabbed three times in her ground-floor flat by her aggressive boyfriend following a lengthy drinking episode.
Barry Paul Hayman, aged 37 and living on Reid Street in Darlington, pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment at Teesside Crown Court, with a minimum term of 12 and a half years before he can seek parole.
The judge, Mr.
Justice Eder, ordered that Hayman serve this minimum period before being released.
Her family, particularly her sister Kay, expressed distress over the case, accusing Hayman of being a controlling individual and criticizing the court for the relatively lenient sentence.
They shared concerns over Lea’s previous warnings, where she expressed fears that her death was inevitable, mentioning her aunt’s warning that 'One day he will kill me.' Court proceedings detailed a pattern of domestic violence, including police investigations, a suspended jail sentence, restraining orders, and past assaults observed by her son.
On the night of her murder, Lea had returned home intoxicated, and after socializing, Hayman suddenly attacked her, just 45 minutes after others had left.
The examination of her body revealed over 20 bruises, signs of strangulation, and stab wounds from a kitchen knife.
This tragedy highlights the lethal combination of domestic abuse and alcohol misuse, which often worsens violence.
Family members and police officials voiced their heartbreak and urged for stronger protective systems and greater accountability to prevent such tragedies.
