BARRY JONES FROM LEEDS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AFTER ONLINE PREDATION
In a recent case heard at Leeds Crown Court, Barry Jones, a 55-year-old resident of Leeds, was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in illegal sexual communications and attempting to exploit a minor online. The incident unfolded when Jones, believing he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl, initiated contact through social media platforms, leading to a series of disturbing exchanges.
According to prosecutor Philip Standfast, Jones first made contact with what he thought was a teenage girl named Lucy on the website Qeep in November of the previous year.
During their conversations, Jones made inappropriate sexual comments and even asked Lucy to perform sexual acts on another child, demonstrating a clear intent to exploit minors for sexual gratification.
The court was informed that Jones later moved their conversation to the messaging app Kik, where he continued to pursue his illicit interests.
He boasted about owning a fast car and suggested they should meet in person, further indicating his predatory intentions.
The most incriminating evidence was a video that Jones sent to Lucy, depicting himself performing a sexual act, which he admitted to having sent.
Jones was charged with multiple offenses, including inciting a female to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause a child to watch sexual acts, and engaging in sexual communications with a minor.
His criminal history includes previous convictions for indecent exposure in 1987 and 1989, as well as indecent assault on a female under and over 16 in 1995, highlighting a pattern of concerning behavior.
During the court proceedings, Jones, who was unrepresented by legal counsel, expressed remorse, stating, “I would just like to say I’m sorry and ashamed,” and acknowledged his responsibility for his actions.
Judge James Spencer QC sentenced him to two years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his offenses and his prior convictions.
The judge remarked, “You have previous convictions not only of exposing yourself but then when you were quite a mature person you indecently assaulted a girl,” underscoring the gravity of the case and the need for appropriate punishment.
