BARRY CLARK FENCING TEACHER FROM DAGENHAM AND FELIXSTOWE JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Dagenham and Felixstowe, Barry Clark, a well-known fencing instructor and prominent figure within the sport, has been sentenced to six years in prison following his conviction on multiple counts of sexual assault. The offences involved a young girl and spanned over a period of five years, during which Clark engaged in repeated acts of sexual misconduct.

Clark, aged 61 and residing on Darsham Close, was accused of abusing the girl starting when she was just 12 years old. The allegations first surfaced during a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where the court heard that Clark, who was actively involved in the fencing community both locally and nationally, had begun his inappropriate conduct shortly after meeting the girl. The court was told that Clark, who had previously been an international fencer before injuries ended his competitive career, used his position as her coach to manipulate and exploit her trust.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Clark’s misconduct was not limited to isolated incidents. Instead, he engaged in a pattern of sexual abuse that included sending the girl intimate letters and professing his love for her. The court heard that the abuse started early in the 1990s when Clark was teaching at a school in Dagenham. During this period, he would often spend time alone with her in his office or in empty classrooms, where the assaults took place. Witnesses described how Clark would initiate physical contact, such as lifting her by the waist, wrapping her legs around him, and rubbing against her.

Further disturbing details emerged about Clark’s conduct outside the school environment. It was revealed that he molested the girl in his car while her parents believed he was simply driving her to fencing matches. The girl’s parents, unaware of Clark’s true intentions, even allowed him to stay overnight at their home before competitions, trusting him as her coach and mentor. The court also heard that in 2003, the girl and Clark developed an adult relationship after she contacted him via the internet. This relationship persisted for three years, and it was only after it ended that the girl felt able to come forward and report the abuse.

During the proceedings, Clark denied the allegations of molestation, claiming that the girl had a crush on him and that any physical contact was innocent. He insisted that the stretching and massaging exercises he performed on her after sporting activities were purely for her benefit and not sexual in nature. Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty of eight counts of indecent assault, acquitting him of one charge. The judge, Simon Freeland QC, described the offences as being of the “utmost seriousness” and emphasized that Clark had manipulated the girl for his own sexual gratification.

As a result of his conviction, Clark will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. His wife, Jos, aged 44, publicly declared her support for him, asserting that she believed he was innocent of the charges and described him as “absolutely lovely.” Clark’s involvement in fencing extended beyond coaching; he served as chairman and secretary of the Suffolk County Fencing Union, was a member of the Epee referees’ panel of the British Fencing Association (BFA), and was a women’s team selector for the same organization. His reputation within the fencing community was well established until these serious allegations surfaced, casting a shadow over his career and personal life.
