AVRIL SCOTT OF GATESHEAD CONVICTED FOR NEGLIGENTLY ABANDONING ELDERLY DOG BENJI

Avril Scott, a woman born on October 26, 1968, and residing on Edgeware Road in Gateshead NE8 3UU, was found guilty of neglecting her elderly pet dog, Benji. The case highlights a tragic instance of animal cruelty that culminated in the dog being euthanized after suffering from severe neglect.

Scott, who previously worked as a careworker and originally hails from Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham, failed to provide necessary veterinary care for Benji, an aging mongrel. Despite the dog enduring a painful and swollen ear infection for several weeks, Scott did not take any action to seek medical attention. The swelling in Benji’s ear had become more than twice its normal size, a clear sign of the severity of the infection. However, Scott claimed she had not noticed any issues until the day before the RSPCA officers arrived at her residence in January.

The RSPCA’s investigation revealed that Scott’s neglect was prolonged and serious. Instead of seeking veterinary help, she chose to go out for a night out, ignoring the worsening condition of her pet. The court heard that the delay in treatment was critical, as the infection had been present for an estimated two to three weeks, according to a report from an animal health expert.

Prosecutor Denise Jackman from the RSPCA emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The animal was euthanised three days later.” She further explained that Benji’s euthanasia was not solely due to the ear infection but also because of his advanced age and Cushings disease, a condition that complicates his health further.

Mrs. Jackman pointed out that if Scott had been a responsible owner, she would have noticed the pain and distress her dog was experiencing, likely causing Benji to yelp or show signs of suffering. Her failure to act promptly and appropriately ultimately led to the tragic outcome.

In sentencing, Scott was ordered to pay a total of £640 in fines, costs, and surcharges. Additionally, she was disqualified from owning any animals for three years, a ban that expired in 2019, with the exception of her two pet goldfish. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of attentive and compassionate pet ownership, especially for vulnerable, elderly animals.
