PAEDOPHILE RAPIST ARRAN MARKWICK CONVICTED AT BASILDON COURT
A man from South Essex smiled at a woman he had assaulted sexually as he was escorted to the holding cells after admitting his guilt.Arran Markwick, 31, residing in Hillcrest View, Basildon, was told to anticipate a prison term in the “double digits” following his confession to sexual offenses involving two victims—one an adult and the other a young girl.
Markwick, who has prior convictions for paedophilia and rape, displayed a defiant attitude by staring and grinning at his adult victim as he was taken from the courtroom.
The woman, visibly upset and tearful, shook her head at his gesture, her tears flowing.
During his appearance at Basildon Crown Court on June 26, two police officers expressed their relief and satisfaction.
Judge Richard Conley warned him, “You have now admitted some very serious offences, for which you can expect to go to prison for many years.
Double figures.” Prior to the trial, Markwick admitted to four sexual assaults against a girl under 13.
He had also earlier confessed to causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and using coercive control over an adult woman but denied the charges of rape against both victims.
On the day of the hearing, he pleaded guilty to raping the woman and attempting to rape the girl.
The Crown Prosecution Service agreed to settle the case based on these pleas and agreed not to pursue the rape charge concerning the girl.
His sentencing has been scheduled for August 17, with the judge cautioning that he faces a “very substantial sentence.”
