ANTHONY PADMANATHAN FROM NORTHAMPTON ADMITS TO DOWNLOADING OVER 1,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has shocked the Northampton community, Anthony Padmanathan, a 34-year-old resident of Colonial Drive, Colingtree Park, has admitted to downloading an alarming number of indecent images and videos depicting children.

The details of his criminal activity emerged during a hearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court, where Padmanathan pleaded guilty to six charges of making indecent photographs of a child, along with one charge of possessing such illegal material.

Investigations revealed that between October 2010 and January 2013, Padmanathan’s computer was used to download a total of 1,177 illicit files, including both images and videos.

Of these, a significant 343 files were classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe and extreme form of child exploitation imagery.

The sheer volume and nature of these files prompted the court to consider the gravity of the case carefully.

District Judge John Temperley, presiding over the case, decided that the matter was serious enough to warrant a sentencing hearing at Northampton Crown Court.

He ordered that Padmanathan be transferred to the higher court for sentencing scheduled for Thursday, October 28.

During the hearing, Judge Temperley emphasized the importance of the case, stating, “I take the view that this case is serious enough for the Crown Court to decide.” He also acknowledged the potential for rehabilitation, suggesting that the court might consider community-based penalties if Padmanathan demonstrated genuine remorse and compliance.

However, the judge warned that any breach of such community orders could result in a custodial sentence, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed.

Prosecutor Nigel Chapman provided further details, explaining that the police investigation was initiated after administrators of a peer-to-peer file-sharing platform detected suspicious activity linked to Padmanathan’s account.

This led to a search warrant being executed at his Northampton home, where officers discovered numerous images and videos stored on various hard drives and memory sticks.

During police interviews, it was noted that Padmanathan suffers from learning difficulties, and an ‘appropriate adult’ was present to assist him, highlighting his vulnerability during the process.

Following his arrest, Padmanathan cooperated with authorities and expressed remorse for his actions.

Defence solicitor Maria Mullen stated that her client had taken responsibility for his conduct by pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

She also mentioned that Padmanathan has been actively seeking help for his issues and has been undergoing counselling since his arrest, demonstrating a willingness to address his problems and prevent future offending.
