ANTHONY O’CONNOR FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED FOR INTERNET GROOMING AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION IN YORKSHIRE
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and exploitation, Anthony O’Connor, a man from Darlington, was convicted of heinous crimes involving a vulnerable schoolgirl from Yorkshire. The incident, which came to light in November 2013, revealed a calculated and manipulative pattern of abuse carried out over the internet, leading to severe psychological trauma for the young victim.
According to court proceedings, O’Connor, then aged 57, initiated contact with the girl through social media, initially posing as a lesbian named Susan.
The girl, who was only 13 at the time and from Kirklees, believed she was communicating with an older girl.
O’Connor’s deliberate deception was part of a calculated strategy to lure the teenager into a trap of grooming and exploitation.
Over several months, he built a false sense of trust, telling her that she loved her and convincing her to perform acts on webcam, which he recorded for his own gratification.
Judge Rodney Jameson QC, presiding at Leeds Crown Court, sentenced O’Connor to 14 years and eight months in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the case, describing how O’Connor had effectively turned the girl into his internet slave, causing her profound psychological harm.
The court heard that O’Connor’s actions exemplified a disturbing trend of online grooming followed by blackmail, a form of sexual exploitation that is increasingly prevalent in modern society.
During the trial, it was revealed that O’Connor’s manipulation extended further when he persuaded the girl to involve her brother, promising that he would have sex with him in the future.
Initially, the girl believed her relationship with “Susan” was based on genuine affection, but when O’Connor’s tactics failed to produce obedience, he resorted to the most grotesque forms of manipulation.
He attempted to coerce her into seducing her brother so he could watch, further demonstrating his predatory intent.
When O’Connor eventually disclosed his true identity as a 57-year-old man, the court was told he was determined to keep the girl under his control as a sexual toy.
The judge described how O’Connor exploited her vulnerability, reminding her that she was his slave and crushing any rebellion by telling her she was worthless.
The court heard that he used threats, including the threat of publishing indecent images of her to her family and neighbors, to maintain his hold over her for nearly a year.
Throughout this period, O’Connor’s actions consumed her life, leaving lasting scars.
The prosecution, led by Oliver Thorne, explained that the case was uncovered after the girl’s mother borrowed a laptop and discovered evidence of the abuse.
Police swiftly arrested O’Connor in Darlington, where he was found to have shared some of the indecent images with paedophile associates and even uploaded them to a publicly accessible website.
The psychological impact on the girl was profound; she had attempted suicide and engaged in self-harm.
In her victim impact statement, she expressed how the abuse had irreparably affected her life, stating, “people say don’t let it ruin my life, but it has.” O’Connor, now aged 59 and residing on Barden Moor in Darlington, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including eight counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, eleven counts of making indecent images, and four counts of distributing such images.
His legal representative, Anastasis Tassou, highlighted that O’Connor had no prior convictions and that his guilty pleas spared the court a lengthy trial.
However, the judge underscored the necessity of a severe sentence, emphasizing the devastating impact of illegal internet activities and the manipulation of vulnerable minors.
The court made it clear that while some images and acts may have initially appeared consensual, the truth was different once O’Connor revealed his true sex and age, and he continued to control and harm the girl despite her evident distress and suicidal tendencies.
