ANTHONY MURPHY AND HIS TERRIFYING RAPE SPREE IN MIDDLESBROUGH AND BEYOND

A man named Anthony Murphy, aged 59, faces the possibility of receiving one of the rarest and most severe punishments available in the UK justice system—a whole life tariff—after being convicted of a brutal sexual assault that took place in Middlesbrough.

Murphy’s violent attack involved the forcible rape of a 71-year-old woman within her own home, just four months after his release from prison.

His criminal history spans decades, and he is considered a Category A prisoner, indicating he poses an extremely high risk to the public’s safety.

As a Category A inmate, he has been classified among the most dangerous offenders, and it is publicly noted that such prisoners cost taxpayers approximately £10,000 per day for their court appearances, which are usually conducted via video link.

The incident occurred on the morning of November 9 of the previous year, when Murphy approached the elderly woman after establishing a brief acquaintance with her and her partner in Middlesbrough.

Prosecutor Jo Kidd explained during the trial that Murphy’s assault was eerily consistent with his past crimes.

When the woman rejected his advances, Murphy became physically violent—he tried to kiss her, then grabbed her around the neck attempting to strangle her.

He proceeded to drag her upstairs to a bedroom where he committed a sexual assault that left her traumatised.

Following the attack, the woman was seen entering a Middlesbrough restaurant, visibly distressed, and clutching her stomach.

She told staff, “I’ve been raped,” while a witness described her as looking frail, struggling to walk, and collapsing into their arms.

She expressed her fear by stating she thought she was going to die.

A restaurant worker recounted how she supported the woman, who appeared physically and emotionally wrecked after the ordeal.

Murphy’s escape from police officers took him across a field near his residence, then to his arrest.

He was detained after a brief chase, during which he was running from officers near Middlesbrough Road, South Bank.

He denied two counts of rape and two sexual assault charges, insisting he was innocent and that he was falsely accused.

His defense argued that he had not committed the crimes, but the jury was unconvinced.

The trial revealed disturbing details of Murphy’s past sexual offenses, including three separate rapes committed in France during 1980 and 1982—each involving violence, threats to kill, and severe injuries.

He also targeted and assaulted a woman in Wales in 1991, forcibly raping her inside a dilapidated van after grabbing her by the throat and threatening her life.

Despite serving a life sentence with a minimum of 10 years for the Wales offense, Murphy claimed to have completed various sex offender treatment programs, anger management, alcohol control courses, and therapy during his incarceration.

During the proceedings, Murphy admitted that his actions had involved targeting women to hurt and degrade them, driven by anger towards women and feelings of rejection.

He confessed to harboring intense hostility and explained that his previous crimes were fueled by a desire to punish and humiliate women at a time when he felt rejected and vulnerable.

When released from prison in July and living in a Teesside hostel, Murphy explained that he had lied to his recent victim about being imprisoned for murder, attempting to cover his true history.

He claimed the sexual encounter was consensual, asserting that the victim professed her love for him and “fancied the hell out of me,” a statement that was vehemently denied by the prosecution.

Murphy denied grabbing her arms or throat, causing bruises, or verbally threatening her, despite the evidence presented against him.

In court, he insisted, “I thought she was in love with me...

It just didn't happen.

It’s a stitch-up.” Murphy’s remarks in court reflected his awareness of the gravity of his actions, with him acknowledging that his story resembled his past crimes.

Nonetheless, the jury swiftly convicted him on all four counts, requiring almost seven and a half hours of deliberation.

However, they could not reach a verdict on a fifth charge of attempted rape, which was left pending.

Detective Sergeant Denise Knox from Cleveland Police commented on the case, stating, “Justice has been served today and Anthony Murphy has been found guilty of his crimes.

This has been a horrendous ordeal for the victim, and I would like to commend her for her bravery in reporting this crime and maintaining her courage through the trial.

I hope she can now begin to move forward with her life.” Cleveland Police continue to encourage victims of sexual assault and rape to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed since the incident.

Every case is thoroughly investigated, and all available support services are offered to help victims heal from their traumatising experiences.

Murphy is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16 via video link, and given the severity of his convictions, he may face a life sentence without parole, marking one of the few instances where a perpetrator receives such a punishment in the UK.
