ANTHONY MCGRATH FROM MIDDLESBROUGH AND REDCAR ADMITS TO SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG BOYS IN TEESSIDE GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL SCANDAL
In a disturbing case linked to grassroots football activities across Teesside, Anthony Thomas McGrath has confessed to multiple charges of sexual abuse involving young boys over a span of several years. The allegations, which have sent shockwaves through the local community, include abuse of a boy as young as 10 years old.
The 41-year-old man appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday, where he entered guilty pleas to seven separate charges just as his trial was scheduled to commence.
His admission came before a jury was sworn in, sparing the court the need for a lengthy trial.
The charges he admitted to encompass a range of sexual misconduct, including indecency with an 11-year-old boy between January 27, 1992, and January 5, 1993.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault committed between 1997 and 2003, as well as three charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child from 2006 to 2008.
The court was informed that one of the victims was only 10 years old at the time of the abuse, highlighting the severity and the disturbing nature of the crimes.
The allegations are believed to be connected to McGrath’s involvement in local football circles, which has raised concerns about safeguarding and the protection of minors within community sports.
Judge Sean Morris addressed McGrath directly, stating, “Bail has been granted for a pre-sentence report… the evidence is overwhelming and you have been very sensible to plead today.” The judge’s comments reflect the gravity of the case and the overwhelming evidence against McGrath.
Anthony McGrath, who was previously residing on Thornton Street in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, but is now living in Redcar, was granted conditional bail.
He is scheduled to return to court on July 2, where he will face sentencing.
The case continues to draw attention from local authorities and community members concerned about the safety of children involved in grassroots sports in the Teesside area.
